It had been about four days since that night in the cemetery and Agatha had felt a kind of calm that she hadn't before. She still hadn't seen Edmund since the night of the conception. He was so busy preparing for his move to France that almost no one had seen him out of the mayor's house. Agatha didn't care. She had other plans.
One morning, after her mother had left to go to the market, Agatha began to search the house for her old baby clothes and toys. She tried to remember if her mother had kept such things even as Agatha grew older.
She started to lose hope when she found nothing but things of her father's that Evanora had kept along with a few spell books. She ignored them at first before she noticed the front cover of one read, "Transfiguration: A Witch's Study of Metamorphosis."
She remembered how deeply she wanted to do what Rio did to her knife, seeing it transform into a raven. She began to flip through the book's pages, growing more and more fascinated by the things she read before she set that book down and picked up another. "Illusionism" was printed on the front of this one and it also captured her attention.
She found six books her mother had been hiding under her bed, most likely to keep Agatha from using any of the knowledge within them. She took them, hiding them in her own room before replacing them with her old childhood story books so that her mother would not suspect the heavy books were missing from the chest she had been keeping them in.
She studied them endlessly for weeks until she mastered each skill. But she wanted to learn more. She wanted to be as powerful as Rio made her sound and she wanted to fulfill the prophecy of the Scarlet Witch if it truly was her. How wonderful it would be to be able to rule over everyone and everything. No one would ever hurt or abuse her again if she did. And even better if her unborn child could grow up without any fear or chance of being tormented like her.
She found each skill to be easy which excited her. In just three weeks, she was a master at each one and she started to think her mother was right, maybe she was the Scarlet Witch. And she began to feel a kind of confidence she never felt before. And she wanted to thank Death.
What better way than to pile up a few bodies for her?
It was time, Agatha thought, for her to try her newfound powers in a real fight.
She stole a local horse to ride to the next town over to find the infamous Peabody coven. She had heard rumors that they were many and very powerful from the other witches in her own coven and wanted to try to invoke an attack from them.
"Agatha..." The witch stopped walking when she heard the familiar voice behind her and she smiled, turning to see Rio following her. "What are you doing?"
Harkness turned around, her smile only growing at the sight of the Being. "I've learned some new tricks. You wanna come and watch?"
"It's not safe for you to be doing this during the trials."
"Why? Did someone follow me?"
"I can't tell you that."
"You keep saying stuff like that. Why can't you?"
"Because it would be cheating." Rio told her. "For the same reason I can't kill to take my bodies. And for the same reason time travelers can't tell people their futures. It fucks with the timeline."
"Why did you come here then?" Agatha wondered.
"I can't tell you that."
"My GOD, you're annoying!" The witch told Death before she turned to continue walking.
Rio followed. "Alright. What I CAN tell you is that part of my power is to also sense when somebody is about to die. Sometimes up to hours before it happens."
