Chapter 26: Another Kiss
"Rachel Williams is your biggest competition right now..." Sammy warned, looming over Katelyn's shoulder.
Katelyn nodded. "I know, she's rank #2 right now-"
Sammy face palmed. "Do you not understand English?" she exclaimed. "How about a different language?!" she yelled in French. "Don't worry I'm a spy!" Sammy added in Spanish. "I can find a language suitable for you..." she reminded Katelyn in Arabic.
"I think Sammy meant competition for Derek," Jane pointed out.
"Why are you so angry?" Katelyn asked, tossing her pen back into the cup on her desk.
"Because," Sammy said, crossing her arms. "You've been so busy competing in ranking week that Rachel is sinking her claws into him. She sits next to him for every meal and I always see them walking together. It's like she wants people to think they're a thing. Derek is yours, Katelyn!"
Katelyn sighed. "I really don't like Derek that way..."
"Right, you're in denial," Sammy said in German.
"Alright. Alright," Katelyn said, holding up her hands in surrender. "Please don't speak in every language we've learned since first grade."
"Katelyn," Jane said. "You only have a little time left before you'll never see him again. I think you should come clean with your feelings, enjoy it and then forget about him."
"That sounds so cruel though..." Sammy said in Chinese. "Oops sorry, wrong language."
"We aren't regular girls. We aren't going off to college after this. We begin working. Each day, our life is at risk," Jane reminded everyone.
"I have a great idea, how about you ask him to the senior dance," Sammy suggested. "I'm going with Cole and Jane can go with Aiden. It will be like a triple date!"
"Jane would never ask Aiden..." Katelyn said, trying to come up with an excuse.
"Actually I might," Jane said. "Aiden is actually very pleasant to talk to. Smart, quiet, sensible- unlike any of you."
"So what's your reason now...?" Sammy said with a smile. She didn't even care if Jane just insulted her.
Katelyn sighed. Derek was a pretty good friend now and he was less annoying than before. "I'll ask him to the dance as friends..."
"Just do it today!" Sammy chimed in. "Now or never."
"There's always tomorrow..." Katelyn reminded her.
"Wear this," Sammy said, pulling clothes out of Katelyn's wardrobe.
"What wrong with my uniform?"
"It's after school. We can wear our regular clothes. You want Derek to know you put in some sort of effort."
Katelyn sighed and changed into the white tank top and blue pleated skirt. She wore a pair of black ballet flats and tied a ribbon in her hair.
"Perfect!" Sammy said.
Katelyn rolled her eyes and walked out of their dorm room. She wondered where Derek could be... Most likely in the courtyard. There were stone tables and benches with lots of flowers. Derek said he liked peace and quiet.
"Help!!" a voice screamed.
Katelyn whirled around. There were five students. Katelyn guessed they were freshman girls. Katelyn remembered being asked to play the civ when she was a freshman... All of them had a "civilian" sign taped to their shirt.
