Chapter 29: The Last Night

"I think you're making the poof too big!" Katelyn complained as Sammy was hair spraying her hair.

"Oh please," Sammy said with a mouthful of bobby pins. "It's just to give your hair a little volume."

"Are you sure it looks fine?" Katelyn asked, looking in the mirror.

"Jane?" Sammy called.

Jane paused straightening her hair. "Looks good," she reassured Katelyn.

"Trust me," Sammy said, twisting the rest of Katelyn's hair into a bun. "You look like a high fashion model. I never knew you had such nice cheekbones..."

"Thanks," Katelyn said, laughing.

"Now, I'm going to curl my own hair," Sammy said, giving Katelyn's hair one last spritz.

"Thanks Sammy," Katelyn said, admiring her hair in the mirror.

"Anytime," Sammy said, plugging in her curling iron.

Katelyn arranged her small collection of makeup and studied her face in the mirror. She wanted to wear more makeup since it was like the last special occasion of her life but there was a slight worry that it would attract too much attention. She didn't really like being the spotlight at social events.

"Are you almost ready?" Jane asked, glancing at the clock. "We have to be down there soon."

"Yeah," Katelyn said, throwing off her bathrobe and taking her dress off the hanger.

She was surprised that the dress fit her like a glove. The skirt was a bit short for her taste but other than that it was the most beautiful dress she had ever worn. Sammy readjusted her silver hair clip and Katelyn turned to button up the satin buttons on the back of Sammy's dress.

Sammy's dress was a pale pink dress with a tulle skirt and black sash. It then had black flowers sewn on the side of the bodice. The flowers seem to crawl up to her shoulder and form a strap. Sammy finished her look with chandelier earrings.

Jane's dress was completely black. It had an X back with leather straps. Katelyn loved Jane's earrings. They were simple diamond studs but had a thin silver chain that connected one to the cartilage earring.

"Ready?" Sammy asked, adding her final touches of lipstick and gloss.

Katelyn nodded. "Ready," she replied.

She had to be very careful walking down the stairs. The shoes were perfect except Katelyn didn't wear such high heels very often.

They were supposed to meet the boys by the stairwell. Katelyn felt nervous seeing Derek. When they finally walked over, Derek flashed her a smile. Katelyn didn't know why but she smiled back without even realizing it.

"You look beautiful," Derek said, taking her hand and kissing it.

Katelyn blushed. "You too."

If Derek looked good normally, he cleaned up even better. He had on a suit with a black tie. His usually tousled hair was effortlessly swept back a little.

"I think I hear music playing," Sammy said, looping arms with Cole. "We have to go!"

"Let's go then," Cole said, smiling at her.
