Chapter 5: A Spy Date
“This is ridiculous,” Katelyn said, folding her arms.
“No, it’s not!” Sammy exclaimed. “Who doesn’t dress up for a date?!”
“It’s not a date!” Katelyn repeated for the hundredth time.
“Then what is it?” Sammy asked. “A business meeting?”
“I don’t know,” Katelyn said, exasperated.
She was wearing leggings with an off the shoulder shirt. Sammy insisted that Katelyn take her boots with the gold buckles and Jane donated a necklace.
“How do you only own one mascara and one eyeshadow?” Sammy demanded, flipping through Katelyn’s wardrobe.
“I don’t wear makeup that much,” Katelyn explained.
“Jane, eyeliner?”
“Yeah,” Jane said, handing over hers.
“Don’t cake it on my face!” Katelyn exclaimed.
Sammy gave her a look. “Do I ever cake makeup, Katelyn Hathaway?”
“Fine, but go easy on the eyeliner,”
“If you wear some earrings, I will.”
Katelyn entered the mall first. Sammy and Jane were trailing 10 feet behind her. Katelyn secretly hoped that Derek forgot so then she could turn around and go back to the academy. Usually her Saturdays were spent
Saturdays and Sundays were open campus. After signing out, the girls could take the shuttle into town. Curfew was 9:00. Anyone who didn’t make it back before the gates locked, lost their off campus privilege.
To Katelyn’s dismay, Derek was sitting by the fountain.
“Hi Katie,” he greeted.
Katelyn stopped in her tracks. “What did you just call me?” she demanded.
“Katie?”
“It’s Katelyn,” Katelyn corrected.
“You don’t have a nickname?”
“No,”
“Can I call you Katie anyways?”
“Absolutely not,”
“Fine, Katelyn,” Derek said, standing up.
“So what are we doing?”
“Anything you want,”
“I want to go home,”
“Okay, then we’ll go eat ice cream,” Derek said, grinning.
“Fine,”
“So where do you go to school?” Derek asked as they walked through the mall.
“It’s a boarding school,” Katelyn said, vaguely. “What about you?”
“What a coincidence,” Derek said. “I also go to a boarding school.”
“Around here?” Katelyn asked.
“Nope,” Derek said. “We’re starting a little later this year so we’re just hanging around this city.”
“Do your friends also go to the same school?”
“Yup,”
They got to the ice cream shop.
“What do you like?” Derek asked, tilting his head toward the menu on the wall.
