The next morning, Dina awoke with a sense of peace that had been rare since her relationship with Jamal became public. After last night, she felt lighter, like their bond was more solid than ever. But as she sipped her coffee, a notification on her phone broke her reverie. She squinted at the screen: "Football Star Jamal Musiala's Mystery Girlfriend Spotted at Last Night's Game!"
Dina's stomach sank. She'd grown somewhat used to seeing her name pop up in headlines lately, but it still unsettled her. She scrolled through the article, grimacing at the paparazzi photos that had somehow captured every interaction she'd had with Jamal's family. There were pictures of her cheering for him, laughing with Laura, and even hugging his mom. The captions, of course, speculated on everything from her fashion choices to her friendship with Jamal's family, analyzing every look, gesture, and whisper.
Dina's phone rang, and Laura's name popped up on the screen.
"Have you seen it?" Laura's voice was tinged with concern.
"Yes," Dina sighed, brushing a hand through her hair. "It's all over the place. The comments, Laura... It's like everyone's got an opinion."
Laura's voice softened. "I know, Dee. It's overwhelming, but remember: none of these people actually know you. They're just... fans who have nothing better to do than speculate."
Dina exhaled slowly. "I know. It's just hard. I'm not used to this. But thank you for reminding me. And, hey, how did it feel meeting Jamal's family last night?"
Laura laughed. "Honestly? I was more nervous than you. His mum is so sweet, though, isn't she?"
Dina's face softened as she thought back to last night. "She is. She was so welcoming. I feel lucky, really."
They chatted for a while longer, but after hanging up, Dina couldn't shake the feeling of anxiety. She knew this was part of being with someone in the public eye, but facing it was another story entirely. When Jamal called later that day, her anxiety melted a little as she heard his voice.
"How's my favorite person?" he asked warmly, his voice laced with the comfort she'd come to rely on.
"I'm... okay," she replied hesitantly.
Jamal paused, sensing her hesitation. "Dina, talk to me. What's going on?"
Dina took a deep breath. "It's all this media attention. I thought I was ready for it, but seeing my name everywhere, people making assumptions about who I am... It's just a lot to process."
Jamal's tone turned serious. "I'm sorry you're going through this, Dina. I can't control the media, but I can promise you one thing: I'll be here every step of the way."
She sighed, feeling a wave of gratitude. "Thank you, Jamal. I needed to hear that. It's just a new world for me. I didn't realize how intense it could be."
There was a pause, and then Jamal's voice softened. "What if we spent the day together? Away from all this noise. Just you and me. No phones, no cameras."
Dina's heart lifted. "That sounds perfect."
Later that afternoon, Jamal picked her up and drove them to a quiet beach a few hours out of the city. It was a hidden gem he'd discovered years ago, a place he often visited when he needed to escape the pressures of his career. The sand was soft and warm, the waves gentle and rhythmic. The beach was practically deserted, and Dina felt the tension in her shoulders begin to fade.
They walked along the shore, the cool breeze refreshing against their skin. Jamal reached down, taking her hand, and Dina looked up at him with a smile. She felt the safety of his presence, as though he was a shelter against the storms of the world.
