As Jes woke up, his gaze automatically drifted to his chest, where Bible's head had rested just hours before. But now, the space was empty, and an unexpected feeling of loneliness tightened in his chest.
Loneliness? It had never been a problem before. In the underworld, there were no friends or people who cared. You were just a demon, with a heart as cold as the place you came from.
This feeling hung heavily on him. As a dark angel, he'd never felt anything—only the thrill of war, cutting down heavenly angels with his sword. The only variation to break up the routine was the occasional wine and fleeting encounters with demonesses.
But as a human, he felt something new each day, like a cocktail of a thousand ingredients swirling within him, making him dizzy.
Bible had left without a word, leaving Jes feeling a bit helpless about the situation.
How am I supposed to face him at school tomorrow? He thought as he got up and took a shower.
There, on the bathroom counter, he found Bible's phone. A small smile crept onto his face as he remembered Bible's behavior the night before—cute, he thought. He picked up the phone and slipped it into his pocket.
The day stretched on endlessly as Jes waited, glancing at the clock more times than he'd admit. He didn't know why—it felt like a mix of nervousness, excitement, or maybe just the anticipation of seeing him again, even if only from afar.
Anything else would be impossible. He was a demon with a mission, and Bible was a human.
Under no circumstances could Bible find out he was from the underworld.
It wouldn't just shock him; it would put him in real danger. Both the heavenly realm and the underworld shared one strict rule: no human was allowed to see them.
In heaven, there was a court that decided who would be sent to hell and who to heaven. These judges were also responsible for special cases involving crimes committed between heaven and hell.
Since Bible was a pure soul, through and through, he would likely go to heaven.
But if he became entangled with a dark angel from the underworld, things could get complicated, and he might end up in hell instead.
Hell wasn't just a cold or lonely place; for broken souls who arrived there, it was endless torture—mental and physical punishments that never ceased.
No, Jes had to let Bible go. Despite the feelings he'd developed for him, the thought of Bible ending up in hell tore his nonexistent heart in two.
There were other souls Jes could drag to hell, but Bible should remain the good soul he was. The punishment wouldn't only fall on Bible if he discovered Jes's true identity; Jes himself would face torture in an abandoned realm.
There, he would be forced to cross the Dead Water, walking through it for years. That water peeled flesh from the body layer by layer, each step feeling like walking on nails. Even though an angel's body would heal, the torment would repeat a hundred times over, until one wished they'd never existed, until they questioned their own existence.
Jes had escorted many demons there before—it was part of his duty after sentencing. He'd seen their suffering, and the thought of being one of them made a chill of fear creep up his spine.
And besides, Jes never knew when his mission would end; the lords of the underworld could call him back tomorrow, in a year, or even in decades. Bible would be left alone, suddenly, not knowing where Jes had gone.
And with a limited human lifespan, Bible would age, eventually wanting a family, someone he could grow old with. Jes couldn't age at the same pace—he would watch Bible grow older, see him die of age, and then find himself alone once more.
