“I can’t believe you guys missed out on recreation night”, Thad said, “pretty cool show happened”.

Uzi sighed, “don’t remind me”.

“That one band you like, even. It was pretty cool. Maybe next time?”.

Her eyes held digital circles, “maybe. Not really interested”.

“Wow. Uzi not wanting to go to a show? What’s this world come to?”, Thad teased.

Uzi frowned. This whole thing was reminding her of her dad trying to talk to her, but in a bad way. Her eyes darted over to Colt’s door hoping for N to come out of it. The oil change must be taking a while. She sighed, “Thad, I got other stuff going on. Commitments”.

“Yeah…”, Thad said with a tinge of sadness, “I get it. You guys and Lizzy and V. I had to go alone with J and man was she not into it”.

“I don’t know why you would take J anywhere near fun”, Uzi said.

Thad’s arms splayed out on the couch around him. “I was just bored, dude. She was the only one available. Crazy how little time you get when you become parents because man is it hard for us all to get together for anything. V and Lizzy have been busier than usual lately, too”. She stared back at him, face frozen in apathy. He stared back at her finally realizing how tired she looked, “you good?”.

She was about to say something when the door to Colt’s room opened, N holding their son happily. He whistled and spun him and Colt around, a happy noise coming from the small round drone. “Little dude was so chill!”, N boasted.

“Hey N, Colt!”, Thad greeted, “taking care of the boy?”.

“Just an oil change… also a little chat. Just some bonding”, N said as he sat next to Uzi with Colt in his arms.

Colt smiled, “dad has a surprise for me”.

Uzi gave N a look, “what did you tell him?”.

“Wouldn’t be a secret then, would it?”, N said.

“Yeah… ok”.

He frowned, “it’s ok, Uzi. I’m not going to withhold anything from you”.

“Oh, dang that reminds me”, Thad said, “if the kids wants sports lessons, let me know”.

“Aren’t you leaving to help J out with that fragment situation?”, N asked.

Thad blinked, “yeeeeah?”.

N gave him a concerned look, “do you know how long you’ll be gone?”. Thad returned a blank look, N picking up on it immediately. “You didn’t ask J?”.

“I didn’t think it was gonna take a while”, he admitted, “kick some butt and come home with a cool story. Kinda figured that was all”.

“We haven’t seen J in years ”, Uzi said with a cold tone, “you’re just gonna up and leave without thinking it over?”.

“I did! I just… years , huh”.

“Thad, get out”, Uzi said.

“Uzi?”, N said in disbelief, “that’s uncalled for”.

Her face tensed, body shifting so she couldn’t look at either of them. “I thought we were friends, but if you want to fuck off and hang with J that’s fine by me”.

“Uzi, stop. I know things have been rough, but don’t take it out on Thad”, N said, a hand coming off Colt to rest on her, “where’s this coming from?”.
