One evening, their families insisted on a dinner at Dew and Nani’s home to celebrate the “happy couple.” The tension was palpable as they hosted the event, forced to play the role of loving newlyweds.
Every smile was strained, every affectionate glance carefully rehearsed. Nani would laugh at Dew’s jokes, while Dew would occasionally place a hand on Nani’s shoulder, all for the benefit of their families. But the moment their guests left, their facade crumbled.
“I don’t know how much longer I can keep pretending,” Nani muttered, slumping against the wall after closing the door.
Dew shrugged, unbuttoning his shirt collar. “No one’s forcing you to stay.”
Nani glanced at him, half-amused, half-annoyed. “And go where? As much as I dislike this, I’m not one to back down.”
Dew sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Then we keep up the act. At least until it’s over.”
They stared at each other for a moment, the silence heavy with unspoken words. Nani felt a pang of something—regret, maybe, or just the exhaustion of constantly clashing with Dew. But he quickly brushed it aside, muttering, “Fine. We’ll keep up the act.”
They went their separate ways, each retreating to their rooms, the echo of their arguments lingering in the air. Despite their mutual dislike, a strange, reluctant bond was beginning to form, a thread that neither of them wanted to acknowledge.
