        Chapter 5

The halls of Glenwood High blurred into a haze as Tori stepped out of the cafeteria, the weight of her decision settling heavily on her shoulders. Meur walked beside her, his presence both exhilarating and terrifying. Her heart raced, an electric pulse that echoed the dangerous thrill coursing through her veins. The world outside these walls seemed to beckon her, promising freedom, but also the threat of chaos.

As they navigated through the crowded corridors, Tori couldn't shake the feeling that this was a moment she'd never forget, no matter how it ended. The anticipation of skipping school filled her with a mix of excitement and dread. She had always been the one to play it safe, to follow the rules, but now she was stepping into unknown territory. It was both liberating and suffocating.

"Are you sure about this?" she asked, her voice barely rising above the din of laughter and chatter around them. "I mean, what if we get caught?"

Meur glanced at her, a teasing glint in his dark eyes. "Relax, Tori. We won't get caught. Besides, what's the worst that could happen? A couple of hours of freedom? You need to live a little."

Tori hesitated, recalling her long-standing fear of repercussions—her parents' disappointment, the whispers of judgment from classmates, the thought of being the subject of another cruel joke by Alexa. But as Meur's gaze held hers, she felt a flicker of courage ignite within her. For once, she wanted to feel something real and alive.

"Okay," she whispered, nodding. "Let's do it."

With that, they slipped out of the school's main entrance, the fresh air washing over them like a cleansing wave. Tori took a deep breath, letting the exhilaration sweep away some of her apprehensions. The sun shone brightly, illuminating their path, and for a moment, it felt as if the world belonged to them alone.

"Where are we going?" Tori asked, curiosity piqued as they walked down the sidewalk, Meur's hand casually resting on the back of her neck, sending jolts of warmth through her.

"Just a little adventure," he said with a mischievous grin. "I know a place."

Tori followed him, her heart pounding with a blend of excitement and fear. The more they walked, the more she realized how little she knew about him. Who was this captivating boy with his smirking confidence and unpredictable nature? As they rounded a corner, she caught sight of an old, worn-out building—a forgotten warehouse that stood at the edge of town.

"Here we are," Meur said, gesturing toward the structure with a flourish. "Welcome to our playground for the day."

Tori looked up at the weathered brick walls and shattered windows, uncertainty gnawing at her. "You want to hang out here?" she asked, skepticism creeping into her voice.

"Trust me," he replied, his tone softening. "It's more fun than it looks. Plus, it's deserted, so no one will bother us."

With a deep breath, Tori stepped inside, the musty smell of the abandoned building filling her senses. The interior was dimly lit, dust motes dancing in the shafts of light that filtered through the cracked windows. The remnants of old machinery and discarded furniture scattered across the floor gave the place a surreal, eerie atmosphere.

Meur grinned, his excitement infectious. "See? It's perfect. We can do whatever we want here."

As they explored, Tori felt a surge of adrenaline. She found herself laughing as Meur climbed onto a dilapidated piece of equipment, pretending to be a king surveying his kingdom. It was exhilarating to witness this side of him, one that was so carefree and uninhibited. In that moment, she forgot about the impending doom of consequences waiting back at school.
