Miku and Teto had been hiking through the mountains since morning, the sky clear and the air filled with their laughter. Miku felt a rush of contentment, the beauty of nature around them made brighter by Teto's presence. But as they climbed, the weather changed quickly; dark clouds rolled in, and before long, rain poured down, soaking them through.
"Oh no, it's really coming down now!" Teto shouted over the rain, her voice still bright with laughter.
"Let's keep moving—we can find a spot to wait it out!" Miku called back, leading the way through the winding, rocky trail. They hurried forward, but just as another rumble of thunder echoed through the valley, Teto's foot slipped on the slick path. She fell with a startled cry, clutching her ankle.
"Teto!" Miku's heart skipped as she knelt beside her, concern flooding her face. "Are you okay? Can you stand?"
Teto tried to smile through the pain but winced. "I... I think I twisted it pretty bad."
With no hesitation, Miku wrapped an arm around her, supporting her weight as they continued through the trees, moving slower now but determined. Finally, they spotted a small cabin tucked in the woods. Once inside, Miku helped Teto settle on a dusty old sofa, carefully removing her soaked shoes and inspecting her injured ankle.
"I'm sorry, Miku. I messed up our hike," Teto said, guilt in her eyes.
Miku shook her head. "Are you kidding? If anything, I'm just glad we're both out of that storm." She tried to keep Teto's spirits up with a smile. "Besides, I've had worse injuries. When I was six, I fell out of a tree trying to swing from branch to branch like a monkey!"
Teto laughed, her earlier anxiety fading as Miku continued with animated hand gestures, reenacting the fall. "You should have seen my mom's face! She practically swore off nature walks for life."
Teto snickered, sharing stories of her own—mischievous childhood antics and silly moments, the two of them lost in warm laughter as the rain pattered against the roof. They even found a small stash of hot chocolate in the cabin and made some with an old kettle on a wood-burning stove, sipping it together in comfortable silence.
But as they were finishing their hot chocolate, another thunderclap broke the calm, louder this time. Teto's hand tightened around her mug, her face paling. Miku's heart went out to her; she knew Teto wasn't fond of storms, but this one seemed to be shaking her more than usual.
"Hey, it's okay," Miku murmured, scooting closer. She placed a hand gently on Teto's back, speaking in a soothing voice, "Just breathe with me, alright?"
Teto nodded, though her breaths were shallow and unsteady. Miku continued to rub her back, whispering reassurances, and eventually, Teto's breathing slowed, her body relaxing as she leaned against Miku. Finally, her head came to rest on Miku's chest, her fingers gripping the fabric of Miku's hoodie as if afraid to let go.
Time stretched as they sat like that, the storm raging outside but a comforting warmth growing between them. Teto's breathing evened, and Miku thought she'd drifted to sleep.
It was in this quiet moment that Miku finally let the truth slip, her words no more than a soft whisper, meant only for the stillness of the cabin. "You have no idea how much I like you, Teto..." Her fingers brushed Teto's hair, her heartbeat echoing in her chest as she confessed her feelings for the first time. "I've wanted to tell you for so long."
To Miku's surprise, Teto's voice answered back, soft and a little shaky. "I... I like you too, Miku."
Miku froze, looking down at Teto, who had opened her eyes to meet her gaze. Miku's cheeks flushed, her heart skipping as their eyes locked, a silent understanding passing between them. Teto's hand reached up to gently brush Miku's cheek, her fingers lingering as she leaned closer.
In the warmth of the cabin, surrounded by the storm's chaos outside, their lips met in a gentle, tentative kiss. It was soft, filled with all the words they hadn't dared to say, and as they pulled away, they couldn't help but smile, realizing how perfectly they fit together in this moment.
"I guess... it wasn't such a bad hike after all," Teto whispered, a playful spark in her eyes.
Miku laughed, her heart finally feeling at ease. "Yeah, not bad at all."
They settled back into the sofa, their fingers intertwined as they let the storm carry on outside, both of them content to stay wrapped in each other's warmth.
