(Just to know if you haven't read my other mikuteto book "Harmonies of the heart" then you should check it out since this oneshot is similar to the book)
The studio was eerily quiet in the dead of night. Miku leaned against the wall of the booth, exhaustion evident in her drooping eyelids, but her expression was as intense as ever. Across from her, Teto fumbled with her headphones, the silence between them growing heavier with every second.
They had been practicing their duet for hours, each take somehow missing the spark they needed. Teto's fingers trembled slightly as she glanced toward Miku, who had barely looked at her since they'd started. The distance hurt more than any wrong note.
"Let's try again," Miku said, her voice soft but distant, like she was somewhere else entirely.
Teto clenched her jaw, feeling an ache in her chest. She couldn't stand it anymore. "Miku," she said sharply, surprising herself with the edge in her voice. "Are we really doing this duet? Because right now, it feels like... like you're not even here."
Miku blinked, her eyes finally meeting Teto's. "I am here, Teto. I'm just... focused."
"Focused?" Teto's frustration boiled over. "Focused on what? Perfecting every note, or making sure I stay a shadow behind you?"
Miku looked stunned, and Teto felt a pang of guilt but kept going, unable to hold back. "I'm always just your partner, Miku. Nothing more. Just here to sing beside you and support you. Don't you see how that makes me feel?"
The silence stretched between them, and Teto's eyes started to sting. She looked away, feeling raw and exposed, regretting the words the moment they were out.
Miku took a shaky breath, her expression softening as she spoke in a low, vulnerable tone. "Do you think it's easy for me? Pretending to be okay when I'm scared of getting too close?"
Teto frowned, confused. "Scared? Of what?"
Miku's hands balled into fists as she fought to find the words. "Scared you'll leave," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I didn't want you to feel like this, Teto, but I didn't know how to tell you how much you mean to me without risking losing you."
The raw confession hung in the air, and Teto's heart pounded painfully. She could feel her own anger dissipating, replaced by a tenderness that hurt just as much. "Do you even know what it's like for me, standing beside you every day, feeling... invisible?" Her voice broke, and she looked down, ashamed of her vulnerability.
Miku took a step closer, her hand trembling as she reached out and gently tilted Teto's chin up so their eyes met. "I don't want you to feel invisible," she said, her voice full of anguish. "I want you to know... you mean everything to me."
Teto's breath hitched as Miku leaned in, her eyes glistening. Before she could think, Miku's lips met hers in a soft, tentative kiss. It was gentle but intense, and Teto could feel the unspoken words, the feelings they had both kept hidden, pouring out in that single moment. She leaned into it, her hands clutching Miku's shoulders as if afraid she'd disappear.
When they finally broke apart, both were breathless, their faces flushed. They stared at each other, the tension between them still heavy and unresolved.
"Miku..." Teto's voice was barely a whisper. "This doesn't make everything okay. We have so much to talk about."
Miku nodded, her expression pained but determined. "I know. But I can't lose you, Teto. I'll do whatever it takes to show you how much you mean to me. I just... I need you here with me."
Teto reached out, squeezing Miku's hand. "Then don't push me away. Don't make me feel like a stranger."
Miku nodded, her thumb brushing over Teto's knuckles as they shared a look of mutual understanding and pain. The silence was thick, but it felt warmer, filled with the unspoken promise that, despite everything, they'd keep fighting to be there for each other.
