It was a bright Saturday morning, and Bey was lounging comfortably on the couch, sipping on a hot cup of tea while Jay scrolled through his phone beside her. When the doorbell suddenly chimed, Bey’s eyes lit up, and she immediately turned to Jay, an excited smile spreading across her face.
Jay raised an eyebrow, chuckling at her reaction. “Don’t tell me you’re more excited to see my mom than I am.”
“Oh, hush! I haven’t seen her in weeks!” Bey laughed, nudging him playfully. She was already halfway to the door by the time he stood up to open it.
As soon as Jay opened the door, Bey rushed forward, practically jumping into Gloria’s arms. Gloria laughed, embracing Bey with warmth, and to Jay’s surprise, she even lifted Bey off the ground with a playful spin, both of them laughing together.
“Hi, Beybey!” Gloria greeted, putting her down gently but holding her shoulders affectionately as she looked at her with a beaming smile.
Bey’s face lit up with pure joy. “Hi, Mama! I missed you so much!” she said, her voice warm and full of affection.
Gloria’s expression softened, and she reached up to gently cup Bey’s face. “I missed you too, Bey,” she replied, giving her a soft squeeze.
Meanwhile, Jay stood to the side, crossing his arms with an amused smile. “Well, I see how it is,” he teased. “You just gonna ignore me, huh, Mama?”
Gloria turned to him with a playful grin. “Oh, hush, Shawn,” she said, reaching over to give him a quick hug. “You know Bey’s my favorite,” she added with a wink, causing both Bey and Jay to laugh.
After they’d all greeted each other, they moved into the living room, where Bey had already set out tea and some snacks, a small gesture to make her mother-in-law feel right at home. Gloria settled onto the couch, and Bey poured them each a cup of tea, handing Gloria’s to her with a smile.
As they sipped their tea, Bey leaned back, feeling the comfort of Gloria’s presence settle over her like a warm blanket. There was something so natural about talking to Gloria—it was as if they were old friends who’d known each other for years.
“So,” Gloria began, taking a careful sip, “tell me what’s new, Beybey. How’s everything going?”
Bey sighed with a relaxed smile. “It’s been good, Mama. Busy, of course, with the kids and everything, but good. Sometimes I feel like there’s barely enough time in the day.”
Gloria nodded, understanding in her eyes. “Oh, I remember those days all too well. But you’re doing a wonderful job, Bey. Every time I see those little ones, I see the love and patience you pour into them. It’s beautiful.”
Bey smiled, her cheeks warming with appreciation. “Thank you, Mama. It means so much coming from you.”
They chatted about family, work, and life, with Gloria sharing stories from when Jay was little and Bey laughing as she listened. They spoke about funny childhood memories, the kids’ latest antics, and their plans for the holidays. Gloria’s laughter was warm and infectious, and every now and then, she’d reach over to touch Bey’s arm or give her hand a gentle squeeze, as though reminding her, I’m here for you.
After a while, they decided to put on a movie, choosing a lighthearted comedy that they both loved. Bey curled up comfortably on the couch, eventually resting her head gently on Gloria’s shoulder as the movie played. Gloria shifted slightly, wrapping an arm around Bey’s shoulders, and they settled in, enjoying the quiet moment together.
Jay wandered back into the room, grinning as he took in the sight of his wife and mom, cozied up together like lifelong friends. He leaned down to give Bey a quick kiss on her forehead, causing her to look up at him with a smile.
“I’m going to pick up the kids from Kelly’s,” he said softly. “I’ll be back soon.”
“Okay, love,” Bey replied, squeezing his hand before he left.
As the movie continued, Gloria absentmindedly brushed her fingers through Bey’s hair, something she’d done for Jay countless times as a child. Bey found it incredibly soothing, and she closed her eyes for a few moments, soaking up the comfort and familiarity.
Not long after, Jay returned with Blue, Rumi, and Sir, and as soon as they spotted their grandma on the couch, they ran to her with excited squeals.
“Grandma!” Blue cried, throwing her arms around Gloria’s neck, followed quickly by Rumi and Sir, who nestled in on either side of her. Gloria laughed, overwhelmed with hugs and kisses as she tried to embrace all three of them at once.
“Oh, my babies!” she exclaimed, pressing kisses to each of their heads.
Bey crossed her arms with a mock pout, giving Jay a playful nudge. “Hey, excuse me—that’s my mother-in-law!” she said, laughing as the kids continued to shower Gloria with love.
Jay chuckled, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. “Looks like you’re outnumbered, babe.”
The kids laughed, looking up at their mom with playful smiles, and Blue added, “But we haven’t seen Grandma in forever, Mom!”
Gloria wrapped her arms around all three kids, her eyes sparkling with love. “There’s more than enough of me to go around,” she said warmly. “I’m all yours, my loves.”
The whole room was filled with laughter and joy, a feeling of love that seemed to wrap around them all. Bey settled back down on the couch, happily watching as her children continued to snuggle up to their grandma, telling her stories and showing off their latest drawings.
Finally, Gloria patted the couch beside her, smiling up at Bey. “Come on, Beybey. There’s always room for you right here.”
Bey grinned and scooted over, joining her mother-in-law on the couch as the kids nestled in around them. They spent the rest of the afternoon talking, laughing, and simply enjoying each other’s company. As they sat together, surrounded by warmth and love, Bey couldn’t help but feel that her family was everything she’d ever dreamed of and more. The love and bond they all shared felt like the greatest gift, filling her with a deep, abiding sense of gratitude.
