Katherine moved swiftly through the dimly lit hallway, her footsteps muffled by the thick carpet beneath her feet. The hour was late, and most of the court had retired for the evening, leaving only the occasional flicker of torchlight to break the shadows. The quiet served as both a reprieve and a reminder of the secrets that lurked in every corner of the palace.
Her heart raced as she approached the appointed corridor where she had arranged to meet Captain Beaumont. The unease she’d felt since noticing the nobles’ suspicious behavior had grown, and she knew she couldn’t dismiss it as mere imagination. What she’d seen—and overheard—hinted at something dangerous, something treasonous. And in Tristian, she sensed not only an ally but someone who could help her make sense of the subtle threats surrounding them.
As she rounded the corner, she saw him—a silhouette leaning casually against the stone wall, partially cloaked in shadows. Even in the low light, his presence was unmistakable, commanding yet subdued. He straightened when he saw her, his gaze softening as she approached.
“Katherine,” he greeted her, his voice low, the sound of her name spoken with an unexpected familiarity that sent a thrill through her. “You came.”
She nodded, catching her breath. “I felt I had to. There’s something unsettling happening, Captain, and I cannot ignore it.”
“Tristian,” he corrected gently. “If we are to work together, you may as well use my name.”
A small smile tugged at her lips. “Very well—Tristian. I am not one to stir alarm over nothing, but there is a darkness gathering, and I believe Babington and his associates are at its heart.”
He listened, his expression intent, his gaze never wavering from hers. In the dim light, his eyes held an intensity that drew her in, as though he saw not just the woman standing before him but the thoughts and fears she carried within her.
“What did you see?” he asked, his tone serious.
Katherine took a deep breath, her mind replaying the moments she had observed earlier that day. “It was more what I sensed—a tension among them, an urgency. I overheard one of them—Babington himself—speak of a letter, one they believed would soon be intercepted. He seemed… desperate.”
Tristian’s eyes narrowed. “That fits with what I’ve been hearing. Walsingham’s men intercepted a letter addressed to Queen Mary, written in code. They believe Babington and his associates are planning something more than mere unrest. Something that could threaten the Queen herself.”
The weight of his words settled over her, cold and foreboding. She had suspected as much, but hearing it confirmed filled her with a renewed sense of urgency. She glanced down the hall, ensuring they were alone, before speaking in a hushed tone.
“They are reckless,” she murmured. “But I sense they are also desperate. Desperate men do foolish things.”
Tristian regarded her thoughtfully, a faint smile appearing on his lips. “You have a keen instinct for these matters, Katherine. Most would dismiss such things as idle talk, but you see beneath the surface. It’s rare.”
She met his gaze, surprised by the warmth in his words. She hadn’t expected his admiration, yet there was something about his steady confidence that soothed her, that made her feel seen in a way she rarely felt at court. “Perhaps it is a gift—and a curse,” she replied softly. “To notice what others do not.”
They fell into a brief silence, each aware of the shared understanding that had grown between them. In this dimly lit corridor, they were both stripped of their formal titles, of the personas they wore within the palace walls. Here, they were simply two people united by purpose, bound by a trust neither had anticipated.
