Crisp white walls, bed on both sides of the room, desks in the middle, our closets were bigger than a pantry, our bathroom was big enough for us to party in.
“Is this where we will be staying?” I asked the principal, he gave me a huge smile and I jumped around in happiness. Zemira laughed at my childishness.
“Well, I let you two ladies settle in, the dinner time is 8:00 pm. You’ll hear the bell ring, but I’ll come get you, if I don’t come that means I’m probably stuck in something so someone else will come get you,” the principal told us. Zemira and I said our thanks and the principal left us to our new room. I grabbed Zemira’s arm and started jumping around.
“This feels like a movie!” I exclaimed. Zemira laughed.
“I know right?!”
“Alright let’s finish getting unpacked and poke around in this school,” I suggested, but Zemira gave me a glare.
“You may look all innocent but you can be sneaky when you want to be,” she told me. I stuck my tongue out at her, then grabbed my luggage and got to work. After what felt like forever, Zemira and I were finally done unpacking. Zemira’s side looked more girly while mine looked like a library. The bell rang marking the time to go to dinner. Zemira and I sat on our beds waiting patiently for the principal to come get us. A knock on the door got us jumping toward the door.
Zemira opened the door, “Are you two young ladies ready for dinner?” The principal asked us. We both nodded and started following him.“ I have a son about your age, if you like he could sit with you guys.”
“That would be great!” Zemira said with a smile. I frowned, I did not want to meet anyone else. We kept following in silence. The dining hall was bigger than any gym I had seen in high school.
My jaw was left hanging, but Zemira pushed it closed.“Please have a seat at any table. The food will be served shortly,” he told us and left us. Zemira and I got a seat closest to the door and in the corner. People in full black clothing served us our food: fried chicken, salad, spicy fries, and a glass of a sweet drink. I dug in as soon as it was in front of me.
“So, you two are the new students?” said a voice behind us, the same voice from my dream. I turned around and immediately anger burned in my stomach blinding me. I picked up the butter knife and stopped it on his throat, inches from cutting it. Everybody in the cafeteria stopped talking and looked at us. Zemira got up and put her hand on my shoulder. The same green eyes stared back at me, the same blond hair covered his face, the same lips that had pulled that smug grin.
“Saija, what the hell are you doing! Let him go!” Zemira said pulling my arm but I wouldn’t budge. He’s finally in front of me.
“Stop it!” I can finally finish this damn story.
“SAIJA!” Zemira yelled at me, bringing me back to reality. I looked at her and looked at the boy, who was shaking. What was I doing? I dropped the knife and my knees gave out, making me fall.
“I…I am so sorry. I do-don’t know wh-what came ov-over me. I am so s—sorry,” I stammered. Zemira stared at me in disbelief.
“S—Saija what…” she looked over to the blonde haired boy.
“I apologize for my sister’s behavior, Saija, maybe we should take dinner to go…” She picked me up, off of my knees and took my plate and hers, “Could you maybe not tell your dad about this? I promise we’ll stay out of your way.” He cleared his throat and smiled
“It’s fine, I won’t tell my father”
Zemira sighed in relief, finally leaving the mess hall with me. We made our way back to our room.“Zemira, I’m so sorry I—I don’t even know what was going through my mind…” She set my plate down on the dresser and plopped down on her baby pink comforter with her plate in hand and continued eating.
