Earn hadn't even noticed the arrival of reinforcements on the battlefield. Just minutes earlier, a rain of blood had covered the muddy, rocky ground. The sky had turned a devilish red, and demons were rushing in from all directions, charging at the small battalion of Angels. They were supposed to lose this fight. But Lada had saved them.
The blonde felt nothing when two other Angels, finally arriving to support their battalion, lifted her from the ground, dragging her to the nearest transport portal. She didn't see her comrades receiving the care they needed. She didn't hear Amira's screams as she tried to bring her back to reality. Earn felt broken. A part of her had disappeared along with the captain of her battalion. All that was left was a loud void within her. Her soul had been torn apart, leaving behind nothing but an empty shell of herself.
The return to base was hazy and unimportant. The Angel couldn't think about anything. Her mind could only focus on one thing: the excruciating pain in her chest. Yet there was no blood, but the pain was unbearable, as if a burning dagger had been driven into her chest. She almost felt as if her ribcage had been crushed, but the intact state of her blood-covered armour made her understand that this was not the case.
The two Angels who had previously rescued her let her sit on a bed in the care center. The doctors were busy treating all the members of the order who had been brutally injured by the demons and the explosion of celestial energy.
Trapped in a mental fog, Earn didn't even notice that the number of wounded was greater than the number of sentinels in her battalion. Salomé, sitting not far from the blonde angel, observed her teammates. Each of them seemed drained of all energy and completely disconnected from reality. It was the first time they had lost someone in combat. And this someone wasn't just anyone—it was their captain. The same woman who had supported them through training, motivated them when they felt inadequate, and baked them little cakes on their birthdays. This woman was gone, and she would never return. It seemed almost unreal.
Lada didn't deserve such an end.
Their battalion would have to find a new captain to replace the brunette, but that didn't seem acceptable. How could they replace her? They couldn't. It was far too difficult to come to terms with the fact that Lada was gone. That she would no longer walk through the armoury doors with them, that she would never again offer them her comforting smile. She was simply no more.
Salomé suddenly realized that if she felt such great sorrow at the loss of her captain, Earn must have been completely shattered, perhaps beyond repair.
Salomé cast a deeply worried look at the blonde Angel. Her normally bright eyes were empty, devoid of any emotion. Not only had she lost her lover, but also a part of her soul. The Geminis who had tragically been separated by death in the past were few, but the literature and past experiences of the mentors spoke of the devastation this separation left in its wake. Some Angels had gone mad, others had never again been able to generate or manipulate celestial energy. And, although no one dared to talk about it, some Angels, deprived of their Gemini, had decided to turn to the dark side, joining the demons in their quest for mass destruction.
Salomé had decided that she wouldn't let anything bad happen to Earn. Losing her too was out of the question.
In the days that followed, Earn stayed locked in her room. Nothing made her feel like a living person anymore. She tried to escape her anguish by sleeping, but the horrible images of Lada stabbing herself followed her into her dreams. There was no escape from her suffering. Days and nights blurred together, an endless cycle she couldn't distinguish. She wanted to cry, but all her tears had been shed, leaving her in a state of inertia. Nothing mattered anymore. Why should she care about the war between good and evil when she has lost herself? Everything else was just a cruel joke.
