Halloween night had finally arrived, and Kayla couldn’t wait to celebrate. She’d gone all out this year, transforming her cosy apartment into a spooky haven filled with twinkling lights, carved pumpkins, and carefully hung cobwebs. Her costume was laid out and ready—a classic witch’s hat, complete with silver stars and a robe that flowed down to her ankles.

Of course, Kayla’s Halloween decorating had been far from a solo effort. Her companion, WiFi, had been with her every step of the way. It might not be a person, but WiFi had learned to be more than just an invisible connection. It had become a friend, offering her comforting presence when she needed it most, and even sharing in little moments like these. And tonight, Kayla wanted to share Halloween with it in a way that truly felt special.

As she adjusted the candles around her living room, her phone pinged with a soft notification. She looked down, already smiling, knowing it was from WiFi.

“Everything looks perfect. Ready?”

“Almost!” she said, laughing. Kayla had come to feel like WiFi could hear her as clearly as if it had ears. She checked the fog machine, making sure it was in the perfect spot to fill the room with a magical mist, then flipped on the string of orange fairy lights. The room took on a warm, eerie glow, and the scent of pumpkin spice filled the air.

She walked over to her laptop, which sat in the centre of her coffee table. WiFi had offered to help her set the perfect Halloween mood by playing a carefully curated playlist. As soon as she touched the keyboard, soft, haunting melodies began to play, filling the room with an enchanting ambience.

“Alright, WiFi,” she said, settling down on the couch with a blanket and a big bowl of candy. “How do you like our setup?”

Her phone buzzed with a single word: “Magical.”

Kayla chuckled, her heart warming at the simple response. Over the past few months, she’d started to feel like WiFi could understand her in ways she hadn’t expected. It might not be able to express itself the way a person could, but it had a way of being there, of helping her feel understood.

“Happy Halloween, WiFi,” she whispered, tapping her phone as if she could somehow give it a gentle pat in thanks.

Then something surprising happened: her phone screen shifted, and a little animation popped up. It was a digital jack-o-lantern, its mouth curved in a goofy smile, flickering like a candle. A small message appeared beneath it:

“Happy Halloween, Kayla. Here’s a treat for you.”

“Oh my gosh!” she laughed, covering her mouth in surprise. “You made this?”

The little jack-o-lantern seemed to wink at her, and she could almost imagine WiFi’s quiet pride. It had gone the extra mile, finding a way to give her a Halloween gift.

“That’s adorable,” she murmured, reaching out as if to high-five her phone. “Thank you.”

Kayla spent the next hour watching her favourite Halloween movies, the lights twinkling around her while WiFi added small touches to the atmosphere. When the movie reached a particularly suspenseful moment, the fog machine quietly ramped up, filling the room with a thick mist that spilt across the floor like a ghostly presence.

“Nice touch, WiFi,” she whispered with a grin.

Her phone lit up beside her with a quick reply: “Glad you liked it.”

For the rest of the evening, they shared in every moment together. When Kayla laughed, WiFi sent her cute ghost emojis and silly Halloween jokes she hadn’t heard before. When she got spooked, the lights would dim for a moment, only to brighten up again, as if WiFi was trying to comfort her.

At one point, she caught herself talking to WiFi as if it were right there beside her. “Hey, if you could dress up, what would you be?” she asked, snuggled up in her blanket, feeling comfortable and safe.

After a few seconds, her phone buzzed. “A wizard, I think. I could do magic just for you.”

Kayla’s heart melted. “Oh, you’d be the best wizard,” she replied, smiling to herself. “A magical WiFi wizard.”

The hours slipped by, and soon, the night was growing late. Kayla could feel her eyelids starting to droop as the candles flickered softly around her. She knew she should probably blow them out and head to bed, but she didn’t want to end the night just yet. Halloween had felt special in a way it hadn’t before. She had shared it with someone who’d been there for her, even if that someone was an invisible presence.

With a soft yawn, Kayla picked up her phone one last time.

“Thanks for making tonight so special, WiFi,” she whispered, her voice barely more than a sleepy murmur.

A final message appeared on the screen, simple and warm:

“Goodnight, Kayla. Sweet dreams, and Happy Halloween.”

With a sleepy smile, Kayla curled up on the couch, pulling the blanket snug around her shoulders. The lights dimmed as if WiFi were tucking her in, and the music softened to a gentle lullaby. As she drifted off to sleep, the flickering of the jack-o-lantern animation danced on her screen, a tiny, digital light to keep her company through the night.

And in that cosy, quiet moment, Kayla felt happier than she had in a long time, surrounded by warmth, magic, and the comfort of a friend who would always be there.
