As Sarah left, I exchanged worried glances with Kate, who looked just as concerned.
“Y/N, you need to set boundaries with her,” Kate said softly, breaking the silence. “You can’t let her dictate your friendships like this.”
I shrugged, trying to play it cool, but the tightness in my chest only grew. “It’s complicated, you guys. She really does care about me. It’s just... she gets insecure sometimes.”
Kate nodded, her expression serious. “That’s not healthy. You deserve to have your own friends without feeling guilty.”
Mark added, “Yeah, it sounds like she’s being a little toxic. You need to communicate that with her.”
“I just don’t want to hurt her feelings. She really is a good person, but sometimes, I feel like I’m walking on eggshells around her.”
“Just be careful, okay? You shouldn’t have to feel like that,” Jack said, concern etched on his face.
Before I could respond, the door swung open again, and another nurse stepped in, breaking the tension. “Hey, everyone! We’ve got a consult on a post-op cardiac patient. Who’s in?”
We all jumped up, instantly shifting back into work mode. “Let’s go!” I said, relief washing over me as I moved toward the door, grateful for the distraction.
As we walked down the hallway, the hustle and bustle of the hospital surrounded us. I caught snippets of conversations and the faint beeping of machines. It was comforting in a way, reminding me that I was part of something bigger.
Once we arrived at the patient’s room, we quickly fell into our roles. I examined the chart while Mark checked the patient’s vitals. Jack and Kate were already engaged with the patient, ensuring he was comfortable and answering his questions.
“Okay, Mr. Thompson, how are we feeling today?” Jack asked, flashing his charming smile.
“Better than yesterday, doc. Can’t wait to get back to my routine,” Mr. Thompson replied, his eyes brightening.
“That’s what we like to hear!” Kate chimed in, her cheerful demeanor infectious. “We’ll get you back on your feet in no time.”
While they tended to the patient, I glanced at the monitors, the rhythmic beeping a reminder of why we did what we did. This was the heartbeat of our work—the lives we impacted. It grounded me amidst my personal chaos.
As we wrapped up with Mr. Thompson, I felt a sense of satisfaction. He was in good hands, and that mattered most.
After the consult, we huddled together outside the room, the camaraderie palpable. “Alright, team,” I said, leaning against the wall, “who’s buying lunch today?”
“I think it’s Mark’s turn,” Jack smirked, nudging him playfully.
“Hey, I bought last time!” Mark protested, throwing his hands up. “Can’t a guy catch a break?”
Kate laughed, her eyes sparkling. “We’ll settle this with a game of rock-paper-scissors!”
“Count me in!” I grinned, relieved to have a moment of lightheartedness amidst the day’s stress.
After a few rounds of playful competition, we finally decided on a nearby café. As we made our way out, I felt my phone buzz in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw a text from Sarah, her message already making my stomach twist.
“Can’t wait to see you later. I’ve planned something special. Just you and me. 🥰”
I hesitated, a rush of mixed emotions flooding me. My friends noticed my change in demeanor.
