The Inevitable

I walked into a luxurious mansion on the countryside with Vicente by my side.

"Look who I brought home!" He yelled into the house with a smile on his face as we entered the living room and I frowned at him. My smile dropped when I saw Kelly sitting across from Valentina and they both looked up at us in shock.

So this is where they've been staying. How long have they been staying here and why did none of them bother to call me? I was worried sick. I thought they killed Vicente and this is where he's been hiding- this whole goddamn time.

Kelly came over to hug me but I couldn't bring myself to hug her back.

"Where have you been?" I asked her and she smiled at me.

"With your brother." She told me in a gentle tone and a deep frown settled on my forehead.

"What do you mean?" I questioned curiously.

"Kelly is the one who found me. She saved me and brought me here. If it wasn't for her, I wouldn't be standing here right now." Vicente told me and I just blankly looked at them.

"Thank you." I told Kelly and she smiled at me. "I'm sure that was very brave of you." I added and she just nodded at me and the room dawned in silence.

I avoided eye contact with Valentina like my life depended on it. I could feel her eyes on me.

I never knew that someone could hurt you by doing so little.

She's still doing so little- she's still not fighting for me. She should've fought for me back then but instead she gave me up for adoption.

"Nevaeh? Aren't you going to-" Vicente started and I knew that he wanted me to greet our "mother" so I changed the subject before it could even be brought up. The last thing I need right now is an argument.

"Can I use your phone?" I asked Kelly and she nodded at me.

"Of course." She said before handing her phone over.

"Let me just Google the school's contact information." I uttered while typing into the phone.

"Nevaeh-" Vicente started again but I interrupted him once again.

"I have to ask them to check on Carmella and Camreigh. Vicente can we send someone to go and pick my daughter up from school? With everything going on I don't want to let her out of my sight. What kind of mother would I be if I abandoned my daughter in a time like this?" I asked Vicente before looking over at Valentina and a look of guilt washed over her face.

"Of course. I'll send Ramirez." He uttered before calling his right hand man and I nodded at him in agreement.

"Tell him to hurry, please." I ordered and Vicente just glared over at me but he didn't say anything.

Once Vicente ended his call with Ramirez he informed us that he was on his way to go and pick the girls up from school.

"Hi, Nevaeh." Valentina softly uttered and I felt a painful knot forming in my throat. I tried my best to open my mouth to respond to her but instead of doing that I completely froze up.

"Seriously? How long is this going to carry on?" Kelly asked me in an annoyed voice so I raised a single eyebrow at her.

"What are you talking about?" I asked her with a frown on my forehead.

"The Valentina hate, Nevaeh. She's your mom for God's sake. Your mom! And she's opened her doors for you yet you're sitting here acting so entitled and arrogant. I love you, Nevaeh but show some respect for your mom. She's been through enough." Kelly told me.

"This woman is not my mom and she never will be. She might be my biological mother but she never became a mom to me. She's Vicente's mom- I don't know her and I don't want to get to know her. And don't act like she's the only person who has been through a lot. My entire life was a lie because of her-"

"And your dad." Kelly chimed in.

"She left him no choice!" I angrily yelled at her. Why am I even discussing this with you? This is none of your business. So, keep my dad's name out of your mouth and know your place. This is my life we're talking about here, not yours." I angrily snapped at her.

"And look at how you're living it." She told me in disappointment.

"Says the girl who's starving herself to death." I blankly uttered.

"Tell me- who the hell do you think you are to be judging me?" I asked her in disbelief and she clenched her jaw in anger.

"I'm your best friend, Nevaeh!" She told me and I looked at her in disbelief.

"If you say so." I told her in an annoyed tone.

"Girls-" Vicente started and I angrily glared over at him.

"Why the hell did you bring me here? If all you were planning on doing was to attack me?" I wildly asked him. "I'm done. So, go find yourself a new villain because I'm not the one, Vicente. God, you act like it's such a privilege for me to be in this house when I didn't even ask to come here!" I yelled into his face.

"I'll take care of myself as usual. I've been doing that for the past five years and I never needed any of you." I angrily uttered before storming out of the room.

Wrong. I did need them. Maybe more than I should have. Still, I didn't come here to be attacked by my own family. If all they're going to do is pick on me then I'd rather leave.

If they showed me even just a little bit of respect- things might have been different right now. But there are no boundaries in this family. If I said half the things to Kelly that she just said to me they would've had me crucified.

I guess I'll always be the villain in their fairytale.

I climbed into Vicente's car and was relieved to find the keys in the ignition. I started the engine before driving off and I heard Valentina calling after me, she lifted her skirt so that it wouldn't get dragged on the ground before she started running after me

I felt stray tears rolling down my cheeks as I watched her in the rare view mirror. She's a little too late. I placed my focus back on the road ahead of me with a heavy heart.

My eyes widened in shock when I saw a long line of black cars speeding in my direction. I instantly hit the brakes hoping that they would do the same.

I squeezed my eyes shut in fear as I waited for the inevitable to happen. If it does end up happening, I'll accept it.

After all, death is the tax we pay for life.
