On Halloween night, the air at the dorm was thick with excitement. Pumpkins and fake cobwebs adorned every corner, and Sunghoon had spent the past hour setting up his laptop in the common room, scrolling through his favorite horror movies for the perfect scare fest.
Jake, on the other hand, was desperately trying to act casual. As much as he loved Halloween, he had one little (okay, big) issue: he couldn't handle horror movies. Every jump scare, every eerie noise, every unsettling image would haunt him for days. But Jake, being Jake, didn't want to come across as a scaredy-cat in front of Sunghoon. He had hoped Sunghoon might suggest something like Hocus Pocus, but of course, that was too much to hope for.
"Hey, Jake," Sunghoon called, pulling Jake out of his thoughts. "Ready for the ultimate horror marathon?"
"Uh... yeah! Totally," Jake said, smiling, though it felt more like a grimace. He took a seat on the couch, trying to keep his hands steady.
Sunghoon watched him with a knowing smile and raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure you're ready? I thought you might, y'know... get scared."
Jake straightened up. "Me? Scared? Pffft. Please, I'm not scared of a movie," he said, sounding way more confident than he felt. "I just don't get, uh, why people would want to scare themselves for fun."
"Right," Sunghoon said, smirking. "In that case, let's start with The Conjuring."
Jake gulped. Of course, it had to be The Conjuring. He tried to keep his cool as Sunghoon dimmed the lights and clicked play, but his fingers were already gripping the couch cushions, bracing himself for whatever horrifying scenes were about to play out on screen.
The movie began with an eerie silence. Jake's nerves tightened with every creak and shadow that flashed across the screen. He kept glancing over at Sunghoon, who was watching intently, looking completely unaffected. Meanwhile, Jake's heart pounded at every creepy whisper and sudden movement.
Halfway through, Jake was desperately clutching a pillow to his chest, practically hiding behind it. He tried not to make any sounds, but every now and then a gasp or a little yelp would escape, and he'd clamp his mouth shut, praying Sunghoon hadn't noticed.
But, of course, Sunghoon noticed everything.
Finally, during one of the tensest moments—a dark figure suddenly appearing with a bloodcurdling scream—Jake jumped, the pillow tumbling to the floor. Without thinking, he reached over and clutched Sunghoon's arm, squeezing it tight.
Sunghoon turned to look at him, amusement dancing in his eyes. "Are you... scared, Jake?"
Jake's cheeks flamed as he quickly let go. "N-No! Just—just checking your pulse!" he stammered, trying to laugh it off. But Sunghoon only laughed, his arm still resting right beside Jake's.
As the movie continued, Sunghoon subtly inched closer, and by the time the final credits rolled, Jake was half-buried in Sunghoon's shoulder, his nerves shot. Sunghoon reached over, patting Jake's head.
"Survived your first real horror movie, huh?"
Jake managed a laugh, though his voice was a little shaky. "Barely."
Sunghoon nudged him with a grin. "You know, you didn't have to pretend not to be scared. It's kind of cute, actually."
Jake flushed, looking away. "Whatever, I wasn't that scared," he muttered, even though they both knew it was a lie. Sunghoon laughed again, his hand resting on Jake's shoulder.
"Sure, sure. We'll see how brave you are tomorrow night," Sunghoon teased, letting his arm linger around Jake's shoulders. The next morning, Jake trudged into the kitchen, still haunted by last night's movie. Every creak in the dorm, every shadow, had his heart racing. And as if that weren't enough, he couldn't get the memory of practically clinging to Sunghoon's shoulder out of his mind. He'd hoped, desperately, that Sunghoon would just...forget about it. Or, at the very least, not bring it up.
But of course, he wasn't that lucky.
When Jake walked in, Sunghoon was already at the counter with a smirk plastered across his face. The second Sunghoon noticed him, his grin only grew wider.
"Morning, Jake," he greeted, voice oozing mischief. "How'd you sleep?"
Jake tried to play it cool, grabbing a mug and filling it with coffee to avoid looking at Sunghoon. "Fine. I mean, yeah. Totally fine," he mumbled. "Why wouldn't I be?"
Sunghoon chuckled, leaning casually against the counter as he watched Jake's every move. "No reason," he said innocently, though his eyes sparkled. "Just wondering if you, y'know...saw any dark figures lurking in the shadows?"
Jake nearly dropped his coffee. He shot Sunghoon a glare, cheeks already turning pink. "Hilarious, Sunghoon."
"Oh, I know," Sunghoon replied with a smirk, clearly enjoying himself. "You were so brave last night, Jake. I mean, I've never seen someone handle a horror movie that... dramatically."
Jake's face turned a deeper shade of red as he sipped his coffee, muttering, "I wasn't that scared..."
"Really?" Sunghoon pressed, tilting his head with mock curiosity. "So, uh, you just decided to use my arm as your personal pillow because...?"
"I was—" Jake's voice came out as a squeak, and he immediately cleared his throat, trying to sound more confident. "I was just making sure you weren't getting too scared. You looked tense."
"I looked tense?" Sunghoon's grin widened. "Right, that makes perfect sense, Jake." He took a sip of his coffee, letting the silence hang in the air for a moment before leaning a little closer. "I mean, I think you might've even whispered my name a few times. Like, 'Sunghoon, save me,'" he teased, imitating a dramatic voice.
Jake buried his face in his hands, mortified. "I didn't do that..."
"Oh, I think you did," Sunghoon countered, barely suppressing a laugh. "And then you held onto my arm like your life depended on it. If I didn't know better, I'd think you needed me there."
Jake finally looked up, cheeks flushed but with a determined expression. "Alright, maybe I was a little scared," he admitted, hoping a confession might get Sunghoon to stop. "But only because you picked one of the scariest movies possible."
Sunghoon's eyes softened, though his smirk stayed firmly in place. "Sure, blame it on the movie," he said, crossing his arms. "You know, you're lucky I was there to protect you. You're even luckier I'm not charging for these bodyguard services. I mean, holding your hand, keeping you calm..."
"I wasn't holding your hand!" Jake said, voice muffled in embarrassment.
Sunghoon raised an eyebrow. "No? Then what were you doing with it wrapped around mine?"
Jake opened his mouth to protest, then closed it, at a loss. He was pretty sure his cheeks were redder than a Halloween pumpkin. "Fine, alright, maybe I held your hand once. But if it was so unbearable, next time I'll just watch it by myself."
"Oh, absolutely not," Sunghoon replied, voice softening. He leaned closer, so close that Jake could see the playful glint in his eyes. "You think I'd let you watch a horror movie alone? You're terrible at hiding how scared you get, Jake. And, besides," he added, nudging Jake's shoulder, "who'd want to miss the show you put on? It's way too cute."
Jake's blush deepened, but he managed a nervous laugh. "I don't think you'd survive another movie night with me," he said, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible.
Sunghoon shrugged, his smirk softening into something warmer. "Oh, I think I'd manage," he replied, still leaning close. "In fact, I'll be right there next time you get scared. You know, in case you need... someone to hold onto."
"Maybe I'll take you up on that," Jake muttered, looking away with a shy smile, though his heart was racing all over again.
"Good," Sunghoon murmured, grinning as he gave Jake's shoulder a playful squeeze. "Because I'm not planning on letting you watch those alone ever again."
