A Pillar of Lies
Chapter 5: Preparations
Izuku scrunched his nose in discomfort as he was rolled into the doctor's laboratory. It smelled funny, like the time Mom accidentally put too much soap in the laundry. He wondered if the whole place had recently taken a bath. He had to squint his eyes a little too, as the lights were bright.
'Hello there, little Izuku.' The doctor greeted as he made his way toward him.
'It's you!' Izuku yelped, his eyes wide with disbelief, as he lifted his head up from the hospital sheets to look at the doctor. 'You lied to me!'
It had been a long few weeks for Izuku; he had gotten into an accident and made Kacchan's quirk go. No, he took it—but then his dad gave it back. He was really hurt when he woke up, but it was okay because he got a quirk! Dad showed him all sorts of quirks too; he was so excited to try that out himself. Surely, with this super strong quirk, he'd become an amazing hero, right? Still, none of that mattered yet, because he was still stuck in bed! He thought he would get better soon but he felt worse and worse every day. His Mom said they would go to a special doctor to fix him, so he wouldn't hurt anymore, but she never said it was him!
'Did I?' the doctor said, readjusting his goggles.
'You did!' Izuku yelped again, upset. He might've been only a kid, but he wasn't stupid.
'You said I was quirkless!'
'Izu...' his mom looked at him disappointingly, 'don't be so rude to the man. He's just doing his job.'
'But he lied!'
'That's quite alright, Inko,' the doctor puffed, turning his attention back to Izuku. 'My apologies, little Izuku. I made a mistake. Will you forgive me?'
He snorted. The doctor lied to him and made him very sad for a long time, but...
'It's okay..' Izuku mumbled. People sometimes make mistakes; his dad taught him that. 'I'm sorry too, for shouting.'
He looked up at his mom as she patted him on the head, ruffling his white hair. 'Well done Izuku! That was very brave of you.'
He smiled. His mom was happy, and that made him happy. Plus, he had a quirk! He rubbed his aching chest. His quirk still made him very sickly. He wished he didn't have to be so ill.
'Am I going to get better?' Izuku asked the doctor.
The doctor's face changed suddenly, and he almost looked... excited. 'Of course!' he chimed. 'In fact, you'll be improved!'
Izuku shrank away as he said that. What did he mean improved? It sounded scary. He looked at his mom, but she looked the same.
'What do you mean, doctor?' his mom asked, worried.
The doctor ignored her, instead focusing on him. 'Well, little Izuku,' the doctor continued, scratching his bald head. 'Your father asked that I modify your quirk so that you can give quirks just like his.'
His dad did? Izuku wasn't sure how to feel about that. He never heard of doctors changing people's quirks nor did he understand why.
'I want to speak to daddy!' he asked, pulling on his mom's skirt. 'Please?'
'Okay, sweetie,' she replied, her lips trembling momentarily, though he picked up on that, unsure what to make of it.
'I'll call daddy for you,' she continued, pulling her phone out of her purse, scrolling through it until she found the right number, then waiting as it dialled.
He heard the phone click, meaning daddy was on the line. He reached his arms up to pull on his mom's arm, hoping to hear what his dad was saying, but her phone was too far away.
