Briarlight watched Jayfeather as he trudged back into the den, his fur bristling. The brown she-cat saw Ivypaw and Dovepaw speak angrily to each other, but Dovepaw kept flashing glares at Jayfeather's back.
Jayfeather sat in his nest, and began sorting herbs, though very messily.
"Jayfeather? Jayfeather!" Briarlight mewed, her amber eyes wide as he started to tear through the leaves.
"What?" he snapped.
"You're creating a mess. What's wrong?" Briarlight asked softly.
"None of your-" Briarlight cut him off.
"I've heard that excuse too many times. Now, tell me!" Briarlight growled.
Jayfeather focused his blind blue eyes on her. "Ivypaw and Dovepaw were being very rude."
Briarlight gave a small purr of amusement. "They're apprentices. And knowing them, they aren't very rude."
Jayfeather smiled slightly. "Okay, you win." He murmured before lying down in his nest.
***
"Briarlight! Get back inside!" Jayfeather yowled as Dovewing announced another patrol was coming.
Briarlight dragged herself quickly back inside, and Jayfeather put the bramble cover on the entrance.
"You forgot the back entrance." A sneer came from behind, and Jayfeather turned to hear a she-cat grab Briarlight.
Briarlight's eyes went wide with terror, pleading Jayfeather for help with her quiet whimpers. "Jayfeather! Jayfeather, please!"
Jayfeather felt a rush of anger and frustration as he knew the warrior would kill him. He shook his head, he needed to protect the one he... he loved.
He leaped at the she-cat, and plunged his claws into her neck. She shrieked, and stumbled back. Briarlight was released, and she crawled away. Jayfeather gave a ferocious snarl, his entire back arching. "Never, ever, touch that cat!" he yowled. The she-cat scurried away, and her paw-steps gradually disappeared.
"Why did you save me?" Briarlight's whimper directed his attention back to her.
"Because I.. I love you." Jayfeather mumbled.
"You do?" Briarlight's voice was warm with relief. "I love you too." The two sat beside each other, waiting for the injured to come. "I always have." Briarlight murmured in his ear.
***
"Briarlight? Are you okay?" Ivypool asked as she padded up. Her sister wasn't beside her for once.
Briarlight looked up, her eyes filled with emotion. "No. Millie was right, I can't have kits." The she-cat said, her amber eyes wide.
"Well, Squirrelflight is having kits, I'm sure you can help with hers." Ivypool suggested.
"What about Dovewing and Bumblestripe?" Briarlight asked, confused.
"They aren't mates anymore.."
"What? Why?"
"It's none of your business, Briarlight." Bumblestripe's heavy voice made the two she-cats look over.
Dovewing stood a little way off, outside of the tunnels. Her head and tail were low, the rain soaking her fur.
"Bumblestripe, I'm sorry, but Dovewing hasn't been speaking." Ivypool snapped.
Bumblestripe's yellow eyes were wide. "I can't help her anymore, I'm sorry." He muttered, then walked deeper into the tunnel.
***
"Briarlight! Look at us!" Hollypaw chirped. The black she-cat was standing on her hind legs, while Sorrelpaw was trying to copy her sister.
"Very good!" Briarlight, chuckling as Cinderheart watched her kits in amusement.
Squirrelflight's kits were racing over, stumbling over their own paws.
"Firekit! Don't go into Jayfeather's den!" Squirrelflight called as the orange tom darted inside.
Jayfeather appeared a moment later with Firekit hanging from her jaws. His fur was covered in tansy.
Briarlight dragged herself over, and then led Firekit back over to his mother. She had been very helpful for Cinderheart's kits, and now it was Squirrelflight's turn to be helped.
"I found my kits." Briarlight mused quietly, and Jayfeather purred.
