The Town

The Town is the only thing in The Valley that isn't woodlands, lakes, or the farm. It is connected to the rest of the world with one long cracked road that cuts through the forest.

People don't leave, and the bus that comes in only ever dropped off two outsiders. It was more shocking that people willingly came here than it was to see the KFC cult, Dismemberment Lake, or the museum.

Not everybody was human anymore. It might have been something in the water, or maybe something from the woods snuck into the community when the Whitley family first founded the town. It was rude to ask and less awkward to ignore.

The gas station on the side of the road out of town was far away enough that Shawn was in a world of his own and sometimes forgot not to bargain with hooded figures.

The gas station was supposed to be abandoned, but he kept coming to work. Dedicated to making the bad sushi and drawing coupons to scatter at the local theatre.

He lives there now and is very good at fighting off the bleeding vandal teens with his broom and spray bottle.

Sometimes it's hard to ignore when someone close to you develops into something more. When they tear their skin off and start screeching in the late hours. When they kill your parents and run at you with a look that is unfortunately familiar.

When you have to use your Christmas present from your mother to strangle your brother until he faints in your lap and you're left with a bloody necklace in your hands and a choice to make.

In those cases, loved ones are sent into the forest and told to find the Harrow House. They'll be okay there, and you can heal and move on as best you can.

The best detectives are the ones who live in caves and burned-down houses. If you call, ask for John Doe, but be specific.

A lot of people are in danger, and that's okay. Some of the most fulfilled people out there are electricians, emo housewives, and moviegoers. You will die no matter what, so just have fun and don't accept surgery from cannibals no matter how desperate either of you are.
