The scientist poked cautiously and the pulsing blue plant like thing that covered the walls. Cub sighed deeming the thing relatively safe to touch, as nothing had changed other than the different pulsing patterns it made from his previous experiments. Cub lightly treaded into the faintly glowing cavern the plant slightly giving way to his shoes as he walked. He froze as something lit up the darkness. It looked similar to the plant below him.
"Need to think of a name for it..." Cub thought aloud. It had glowing vines that seemed to writhe with no rhyme or reason. The light cut off after a moment and the writhing vines stilled. Cub inched towards it. It lit up. Cub crouched knowing he would make less noise. He inched closer, and it didn't make a sound. Cub tested with the new thing and found out a few things, crouching is the easiest way to get around it with out setting it off, and later on he discovered that they can set each other off. He had found two of them close together later on when exploring.

After a while Cub had gotten used to the vines lighting up when he made noise near them. He had yet to come up with a name yet.
The tunnel he found himself in was certainly leading him somewhere and Cub bet he was getting close. The sensors had become more common, all of them pulsing and writhing and making their strange sound whenever he moved. Cub moved through the tunnel able to easily find his way even with no torches on him due to the writhing vines. Cub almost stumbled when the tunnel opened into a cavernous room, the only reason he could tell it was so big was because of the small pulsating light coming from all sides illuminating the outline of the cave.

Cub rifled through his inventory looking for something that would help him see. He found nothing. He looked at his communicator seeing if it would light anything up. The light reached one or two meters before the dark over took it. Cub climbed down from the tunnel carefully making sure not to fall.
The first thing Cub noticed was there was no mobs around. It was near pitch black. Why weren't there any mobs?
Cub realized why a few moments later. He hadn't seen the yellow bone like thing until too late. It screeched right in Cubs ear, an echo sounding through the cave. Cub startled back breathing heavily from the jump scare.
The thing stopped its screaming once Cub backed far enough away.
Cub crouched and tried sneaking closer. It didn't make so much as a whisper. Cub pulled one of his pickaxes from his inventory and tried mining the thing. It screeched again but it died out quickly as Cub broke it. Its screaming echoed through the cavern for a moment before dissipating. Something was different though, Cub noticed. The pulse from the squishy plant thing seemed to intensify beneath him like a locator. Something whispered in the back of his mind, it formed a word. Skulk.
That's what it was...
It was an ancient fungus that killed thousands, corrupting their mind taking them over and killing them when no longer of use.
Panic started to set in. Cub backed up slowly. He had to warn Xisuma. Cub looked at his com. A thin layer of blue-green fungus covered it, it was dead.
Cub tore off the communicator. He'll get another one he promised himself.
Cub stumbled through the dark barely able to even see the floor.
A shrieker went off as Cub got too close to it.
Cub froze, he heard the sound of digging. He panicked he couldn't let any of the other Hermits near this. "Stay back!!" He practically screeched just as loud as the shrieker. The digging broke through into the cave. It was from below, not from above.
A deep rhythmic sound came from the new hole in the ground.
Out crawled a creature a meter taller than Cub with twisting horns and a pitch black mouth like hole in its head, it pulsed like the skulk below it but brighter and on beat with the sound.

It seemed to tip its head looking at Cub. The vex hybrid tried to run, it couldn't move. Skulk had inched itself up his leg without him noticing. Cub tugged panic now flooding his senses causing an adrenaline rush. He managed to get one leg free from the fungus trying to claim him. The creature with horns stepped closer, and closer.
Cub freed his other leg and stumbled backwards. The creature cocked its head again. The beating of its heart was all Cub could hear, it felt wrong. The creature reached for Cub as he tried to get away once more, grabbing him. Tendrils of skulk reached out for Cub from the creature. They pulsed with the heartbeat.
