yeonjun wasn't supposed to be here.

every logical part of him knew that slipping into the small bookstore on the edge of town was a mistake. he was supposed to be at home, finishing up his work for the family business or attending one of the countless social events that his parents insisted on dragging him to. but here he was, tucked away in a corner between bookshelves filled with worn paperbacks and vintage novels, waiting with an anxious heart and too much anticipation for someone he should have forgotten.

then, just as he was starting to think he'd made a mistake coming here, he heard the soft bell of the door and looked up. beomgyu was standing there, looking every bit as breathtaking as yeonjun remembered. his dark, slightly messy hair framed his face perfectly, and there was an easy confidence to his posture that made it hard to look away. but his expression softened the moment his eyes landed on yeonjun, and he offered a small, shy smile that sent a warmth through yeonjun's chest.

yeonjun couldn't help but smile back as he moved toward him, feeling his pulse quicken. "you came," he said softly, barely able to keep the relief out of his voice.

"did you think i wouldn't?" beomgyu's voice was teasing, but there was a nervous edge to it. "you know i'd go anywhere to see you."

they stood in silence for a moment, just looking at each other, taking in the presence they both missed. but there was an undeniable tension in the air. they weren't supposed to be here together — that much they both knew.

"you know, if anyone saw us..." yeonjun began, his voice trailing off as he cast a cautious glance around the empty store. but he knew better than anyone how precarious this was. his family had been against him being anywhere near beomgyu for as long as he could remember. to them, beomgyu represented everything "wrong" for someone in yeonjun's position: he was from a family they considered lesser, with different values and a rebellious streak that made him a target for gossip in their small, close-minded town.

beomgyu, however, only shrugged, his gaze steady. "i know. i know what's at stake for you, yeonjun," he murmured. "but... sometimes it feels like we only have these tiny stolen moments. it's worth the risk if it means i get to see you."

yeonjun's heart twisted, his mind racing with memories of all the quiet places they'd found to spend time together, always out of sight, always pretending that the rest of the world didn't matter. a park bench late at night, the quiet corner of a library, and once even yeonjun's family garden in the early hours of dawn. but each time, that fragile sense of peace shattered when he had to go back to his family, to their disapproving stares and whispered warnings about who he was "meant" to be with.

but none of those words ever seemed to matter when he was with beomgyu.

"sometimes i wonder what it would be like if things were different," yeonjun admitted, his voice barely a whisper. "if i didn't have to hide all the time. if we didn't have to pretend that we're just... friends."

beomgyu's hand brushed lightly against yeonjun's, a fleeting touch that sent a shiver through him. "i think about it all the time," beomgyu replied, his gaze turning serious. "about what it would be like if i could just hold your hand without worrying, or walk down the street with you without having to look over my shoulder."

for a moment, the weight of all they couldn't say pressed down on them, threatening to break the fragile illusion they'd built around themselves. but then, beomgyu's face softened, and he reached out, letting his fingers curl around yeonjun's hand. "maybe... maybe we don't need to worry about them tonight," he said quietly. "tonight, it's just us."

yeonjun's chest tightened, and he nodded, letting himself be pulled closer, letting himself fall into the warmth of beomgyu's presence. "just us" he echoed, the words tasting bittersweet on his tongue.

they slipped out of the bookstore together, walking through the quiet streets with their hands intertwined, daring to believe for just a moment that they could have this small piece of happiness. they found a spot by the river, a secluded little clearing beneath a willow tree where they could sit together and watch the world go by. the moon hung high in the sky, casting a gentle glow that made everything feel a little softer, a little more dreamlike.

yeonjun leaned against beomgyu's shoulder, his heart aching with everything he couldn't say. he wanted to tell him that he'd been the only person who ever made him feel understood, that he'd memorized every look and smile and touch, that he couldn't imagine a life where beomgyu wasn't by his side. but every time he opened his mouth, the words stayed trapped, caught by the knowledge that this was all temporary.

"it's beautiful, isn't it?" beomgyu murmured, his gaze fixed on the water's gentle ripples. "sometimes i wish we could just... run away and start over somewhere new. somewhere we could just be us."

yeonjun's breath caught, and he turned to look at him, the longing in his eyes mirroring his own. "you'd do that? leave everything behind... just to be together?"

beomgyu looked at him with a soft, sad smile. "for you? yes. in a heartbeat."

the vulnerability in beomgyu's words broke something in yeonjun. in that moment, he knew he didn't want to keep hiding or letting other people decide what was best for him. all he wanted was this — the quiet moments, the laughter, the gentle touches, the life he and beomgyu could build together, if only they were brave enough.

yeonjun took a deep breath, reaching out to cup beomgyu's cheek, his thumb tracing gentle circles against his skin. "then let's do it," he whispered, his voice trembling but resolute. "let's go. i don't care about what they say. i don't care about the rules. all i care about is you."

beomgyu's eyes widened, his lips parting in surprise. but then, slowly, a smile broke across his face, one so bright and filled with hope that it took yeonjun's breath away. "are you serious?" he asked, barely daring to believe it.

yeonjun nodded, his heart pounding with a mixture of fear and exhilaration. "yes. i want to be with you, no matter what it takes."

without another word, beomgyu closed the distance between them, capturing yeonjun's lips in a kiss that tasted like everything they'd been holding back. it was gentle and desperate all at once, filled with the promise of everything they could be if they were brave enough to chase it.

as they pulled back, both of them breathless, beomgyu took yeonjun's hand, squeezing it tightly. "then let's go," he said, his voice filled with determination. "we'll find somewhere new. somewhere we can be free."

hand in hand, they walked back toward the town, ready to leave behind the shadows of their past and step into a future of their own making. and for the first time, yeonjun felt truly alive, knowing that he was about to begin a journey that was his own — a journey with beomgyu by his side.
