I clenched my jaw so hard; I was afraid my molars were about to give out. I was absolutely sure it was the right decision, but that didn't mean I had to like it.
River had been on his best behaviour all day through magic wolf school, even brought a notebook and took notes throughout Fred's lectures.
"It's important to note," Fred said and held up a pot containing wolfsbane. "That these plants might look harmless, even beautiful. But for you, it's deadly by touch, ingestion, inhalation... You generally cannot come in contact with this at all. Don't touch it if you see it in the wild. Walk the other way, even if it's a longer route. You do not want to be poisoned by this. Gael can tell you all about that."
I cleared my throat a little. "So uh, last year, they had ground up some wolfsbane in chalk. I touched the lettering they had done on the street in front of my house and that was enough for me to get a very strong reaction."
"That was enough for it to enter your bloodstream?" Samuel asked, immediately turning into a biology nerd.
"I'm not sure it did, or if it just caused a reaction to my skin?" I shrugged. "But we had to break my arm in order to get my healing to kick in."
Samuel frowned. "I wonder if it's attacking our blood or not. I should do some tests."
"Nerd," Tasha said, but not in a mean way. "If you need test subjects, just call me."
"I wanna do some blood tests. I mean, I could use my own, but maybe it's good to have several donors." He glanced over at me. "Maybe especially you and Meera since you've been exposed to it before. Maybe you've gained a little resistance. Maybe we can make a cure or anti-body of some kind."
"Like a vaccine?" Abel asked. He had been so good at keeping quiet until now. He had promised not to interfere, but he wanted to go to magic wolf school too, considering he lived with a wolf.
"That's what I'm thinking. If what we're seeing is an allergic reaction, we might find meds that can help with that, if we do get exposed."
"You're coming at this from a biological angle, Samuel," Fred interfered. "None of you were allergic to wolfsbane before you were turned. It's a magical component. Everyone has a weakness, yours is this. Abel's is going without blood. Mine is fire. Banshees have water. Like you could try and burn Abel or drown him and it wouldn't do much. Deprive him of blood for long enough and his body will shut down and he'll go into a sleep-like state."
"So, that's not really a weakness is it," River said, glancing at my boyfriend. "You're not really dead."
"As good as. Why does that particular detail bother you, River?" Abel asked and tipped his head up.
"Okay, enough, oh my god," Fred groaned. "Abel can't be killed-killed like we can, alright? Now, can I move on with my class or do you need to step outside?" She sent harsh looks to River and Abel.
