"OH MY GOD!"
running down the stairs, nearly tripping over her own feet, selene comes to a halt at the sound of familiar yelling that drifts from the living room. "selene! no running and yelling!" her mother calls, heading toward the kitchen, just as selene is.
with her energy waning, she mumbles a soft "sorry," before launching into an explanation about the giant spider she saw—yes, she finds spiders scary; she would appreciate if you were quiet about it.
while placing two slices of bread into the toaster, she turns to see her mother preparing some sort of green juice, which she knows will likely be forced upon her. "so, any plans today, mom?" selene inquires, trying to spark a light conversation.
without looking up from her magazine, her mother hums in acknowledgment while pouring the drink into two glasses. "oh, and i won't be taking you today, so just knock next door. i'm sure steve would love to take you again," linda announces, walking toward selene, her eyes still glued to the pages.
frowning slightly at this late revelation, selene sighs, mumbling an almost whispered "okay," as she turns back to the counter, spreading strawberry jam on her perfectly toasted bread.
once she finishes, she walks to the kitchen island, opposite to where her mother stands. suddenly, in a rush, her mother moves to grab the car keys hidden behind selene. finally glancing at her daughter, she scoffs before filching the board of toast and tossing it into the trash. "selene, dear, we don't need these fats so early in the morning, do we? grab some yogurt from the fridge. alright, bye, love you!" she calls, stepping out the front door before selene can respond.

entering mr. clark's classroom this time without tardiness, selene makes a beeline for lucas, eager to inform him they can indeed hang out at her place today since her mom won't be home. her mother doesn't dislike lucas, not really—she has babysat him countless times when he was younger, often taking selene along so the two could play. but linda prefers her daughter to spend time with girls rather than boys, and since selene had just spent the entire weekend with boys—faking a sickness to avoid hanging out with emma that saturday—she knew her mom would certainly oppose another day added to that streak.
selene would also be joining the av club today, where she could wait for lucas, which the boys didn't mind at all, of course. releasing a tired sigh, she rests her head atop her arms, hoping this final lesson passes quickly.

the familiar ring of the school bell echoes as mr. clark attempts to repeat the assignment, though most of the kids are already vacating the room as if fleeing from a ferocious beast.
