Evelyn entered her dorm with her friend Elliot. They were close friends and shared similar reasons for being sent to boarding school by their parents , even though their parents claimed they sent them there for the opportunities and to provide a better academic education , as well as to help them learn to live independently.

But both Elliot and Evelyn knew that it was just a lie they kept reusing over and over. Evelyn met her best friend , JJ Maybank , when they were just seven years old because they were neighbors. They tended to avoid each other and were extremely competitive , always trying to see who could climb a tree faster or pull off a better prank. They acted like they hated each other , but in reality, they grew fond of each other and enjoyed each other's company.

They cared for one another. One time , a girl ruined Evelyn's homework by pouring water on it and making her watch. When class started , Evelyn told the teacher she didn't have the homework , which was crucial. The teacher was mad. After class, JJ asked her why she didn't have it because he knew she did; they had worked on it together. Evelyn explained what the girl had done, which resulted in JJ stealing the girl's pencil case and breaking her pencils, crayons, and colored pencils.

Both JJ and Evelyn met John B in the third grade , Pope in the fifth , and Kiara in the seventh. They spent almost all day together , either surfing or just hanging out at the chateau. Before Evelyn was sent to boarding school , Kiara had already left for her Kook year , leaving the three boys and Evelyn on their own. What pained Evelyn ever since she left for boarding school was knowing she had left them like Kiara had.

Evelyn was a semester boarder at her school, so her parents decided that when an academic term ended , she would visit her grandma instead of going home. Sometimes, her parents would come to see her at her grandma's, but she never visited home. That confused Evelyn a lot , but she never asked about it. She did beg her parents to let her visit home at the end of an academic term to see her friends again because her dad deleted their numbers , and she hadn't talked to them since.

Luckily , Evelyn met Elliot , and they became best friends. She missed the Pogues , but Elliot truly was the best friend she could ever ask for. They were like the ' dynamic duo , ' as people often called them. They always confided in each other about things they wouldn't tell anyone else.

Evelyn noticed Elliot leave the dorm , probably to get something he forgot to bring. She took out her suitcase from underneath her bed and opened it on the floor. Her parents had finally decided that she didn't have to continue attending boarding school and could return to the Outer Banks. She slowly began packing her things while still in her school uniform. Her uniform typically consisted of a blazer, a white shirt, and a tie or ribbon, paired with a pleated skirt. The colors were usually muted, focusing on dark blues or grays.
