The quiet between Hikaru and Suisei seemed to deepen, the weight of unspoken words hanging in the air. Hikaru looked down at Suisei's hand in his, the warmth of her touch radiating through him in a way that was both thrilling and terrifying. She met his gaze, her eyes steady but full of something he couldn't quite name—something he wasn't sure he was ready to let go of.
He felt his heart race, building up the courage to say what he hadn't yet put into words. "Suisei, I..." He trailed off, struggling to find the right words to match what he felt.
Just as he opened his mouth to try again, a voice suddenly shattered the silence.
"Hikaru! Are you coming back soon?" It was Hyuga's voice, bright and cheerful as it came from somewhere just outside the room. Hikaru instinctively pulled his hand back from Suisei's, his cheeks flushing red. The door cracked open, and Hyuga's head poked in, his brows furrowed in curiosity. "Wait—what's going on in here?"
Hikaru stumbled back, tripping over his words. "Uh—nothing! I mean, we were just... finishing up some... practice!" He scratched the back of his neck, his mind scrambling to recover some semblance of normalcy. Suisei stifled a quiet laugh, her eyes dancing with amusement at Hikaru's flustered attempt to hide the moment they'd shared.
Hyuga narrowed his eyes at them both, the suspicion evident on his face. "It doesn't look like 'just practice' to me," he mumbled, glancing between the two with a mischievous glint in his eye. (A/N: Hyuga, why did you have to interrupt?)
Suisei, recovering quickly, smiled warmly at Hyuga. "Hey, Hyuga! We really were just practicing some dance moves." She tilted her head, her voice light and playful. "Your brother's not a bad partner, you know."
Hikaru blushed deeper, unable to meet either of their eyes. "Yeah, well, don't expect me to be that good next time," he muttered, stuffing his hands into his pockets, attempting to play it cool.
After a few more exchanged words and playful banter, Hikaru and Suisei headed toward the door. Hyuga eventually trailed behind them, but not before casting another suspicious glance their way. As they neared the front door, Hikaru slowed his steps, letting Suisei fall in line beside him.
When they reached the door, he paused, looking down at her, his voice low. "Suisei, I... uh, I'm glad you stayed back to practice. I had... a really good time." He rubbed the back of his neck, his eyes softened with something more than just friendship.
Suisei's smile was gentle, her own eyes reflecting the sentiment. "Me too, Hikaru," she replied, her voice quiet but warm. She held his gaze a moment longer before turning to leave, leaving both of them wondering when they'd have another chance for a moment like this.
That night, Hikaru tossed and turned in his bed, his thoughts restless and circling back to the moment he'd almost shared with Suisei. Her hand, warm in his, and the look in her eyes—he couldn't shake it. Well fuck, I cant sleep. Finally giving up on sleep, he pulled on a jacket and crept down the stairs, stepping outside into the backyard, hoping the night air might help him settle his thoughts.
As he rounded the corner, he stopped, surprised to see a familiar figure seated on the porch steps, silhouetted by the soft glow of the moonlight. Suisei was sitting there, her knees drawn up, her arms wrapped around herself as she gazed up at the stars, lost in thought.
When she heard his footsteps, she turned, her face lighting up with a gentle smile. "Couldn't sleep either?" she asked, her voice soft but carrying a hint of laughter.
Hikaru chuckled, feeling a strange comfort just being near her. "Yeah... I guess I have a lot on my mind." He sat beside her, glancing up at the sky before looking back at her. "I didn't expect to find you out here, though. I thought I was the only one who wandered around this late."
Suisei let out a quiet laugh, pulling her jacket tighter around her shoulders. "Sometimes, I just need a quiet place to think. And tonight... tonight feels different, somehow."
They sat together in silence, the cool night air filled with a gentle hum of crickets. It felt almost like they were in a world of their own, separate from everything else. Slowly, they began to talk, each sharing parts of themselves they hadn't quite dared to reveal before—dreams, hopes, and little secrets that felt safer in the cover of the night.
Suisei spoke of her passion for dance and the places she hoped to travel someday. (If she opened up about it.) Hikaru found himself sharing his own dreams, his quiet fears, and even small memories from his childhood, things he rarely told anyone. Each word brought them closer, their laughter and shared confessions weaving together in a way that felt as natural as breathing.
The hours slipped by, the stars shifting overhead as the world around them seemed to fade away. Finally, as their conversation softened, Hikaru glanced at her, feeling a surge of courage that surprised even him. He reached out, brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear, his fingers lingering for a moment.
"Goodnight, Suisei," he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. Before he could second-guess himself, he leaned in and pressed a gentle kiss to her cheek, his heart pounding as he pulled back.
Suisei's eyes widened, a soft blush coloring her cheeks as she blinked up at him, surprised yet not pulling away. A small, shy smile touched her lips as she looked down for a moment, then met his gaze again, her voice soft. "Goodnight, Hikaru."
They sat together in that quiet, lingering silence, neither quite ready to move. And as they finally rose and made their way back inside, they both carried with them the memory of a night that had changed everything, each of them knowing that something special had just begun.
