Checkmate Suisei. . .

Checkmate

Suisei sat in the living room, heart pounding in her chest as the familiar hum of tension crawled through the apartment. She hadn't even finished reading the text before the doorbell rang—sharp, sudden, like a warning. She knew exactly who it was.

The message from her mother still echoed in her mind, its icy tone making her skin prickle. "I hope you're not thinking of keeping him from me. Because I always get what I want."

Before she could push the thought away, the door swung open.

Akira stood in the entryway, his face pale, eyes wide with shock. Standing behind him, bathed in an almost suffocating aura of control, was her mother. Her icy stare froze the air, and for a moment, Suisei couldn't breathe.

"What—What is she doing here?" Suisei's voice was barely above a whisper, but it was clear—she had no intention of letting her mother waltz in like she owned the place.

"She's here for you," Akira said, his voice tight. His eyes flickered over to Suisei, barely meeting hers before he stepped back, letting her mother enter.

Her mother walked in like she owned the world, her heels clicking sharply against the floor. "Suisei," she said, her voice dripping with disdain. "I see you've made some... choices."

Suisei clenched her fists at her sides, trying to keep her composure. "What do you want?"

Her mother's lips curled into a smile, but it wasn't warm. It was cold—calculating. "I'm here to take what's mine. You're coming with me."

"What?" Suisei's heart skipped a beat, the walls she'd built around herself trembling at her mother's words.

"You heard me." Her mother's eyes locked onto hers, unwavering. "I'm giving you one chance to fix this, Suisei. You bring him to me, or I'll take matters into my own hands."

"Don't you dare touch him." Suisei's voice wavered, but there was a fierce determination behind it. She wasn't going to let her mother control her again.

Her mother's eyes narrowed. "You think you can defy me? You think I'll let you live your little life, making foolish choices, with no consequences?" She glanced at Akira briefly, who stood frozen in the doorway, unsure of what to do. "It's simple, really. You either bring him to me... or I'll expose the truth. All of it."

Suisei's breath hitched. "What truth?" She felt a cold sweat break out on her neck.

"The truth about your little rebellion," her mother said, stepping closer. "About your defiance. About your stupid little boy. Do you really think I won't destroy everything you've built here? Your career, your friendships, everything? One phone call, and it's all over. Your excuse of a career is finished."

Suisei felt a wave of panic crash over her. Her mind raced as she tried to keep control. This wasn't happening. She couldn't let it happen. But how?

Just then, the front door opened again—Hikaru.

He froze the second he saw her mother standing in the middle of the room. The tension was palpable, like a wire ready to snap. Suisei's stomach twisted into knots. She had to protect him.

"What's going on?" Hikaru asked, his voice calm, but Suisei could hear the concern in his tone.

Her mother turned to face him, her smile returning. "Ah, the boy. How convenient." She took a step toward him, her eyes glinting. "You must be Hikaru. Suisei's... boyfriend, is it?"

Suisei's chest tightened. She couldn't let this happen. Her mother didn't have to tear into him, too.

Hikaru stood tall, meeting her gaze with calm resolve. "I am."

Her mother's lips parted, a cruel smirk tugging at the corner of her mouth. "You really believe you can keep her from me, don't you?" She stepped closer, her eyes glinting with cold amusement. "Let me make this very clear. You are nothing more than a distraction. A toy to her."

Hikaru's expression hardened, but Suisei saw the slight twitch in his jaw, the silent fury brewing beneath his calm demeanor. "Don't talk to me like that."

Her mother laughed, low and dangerous. "You don't get it, do you? She's mine. Always has been. And if you don't get out of the picture, I'll make sure you regret it."

Suisei's heart raced as the words echoed in her head. "She's mine."

Her mother was right—she wasn't just threatening Hikaru. She was threatening everything Suisei had built. Her life. Her future. All of it could be torn down in an instant.

"Enough!" Suisei's voice broke through the tension, fierce and raw. She stepped forward, facing her mother directly. "I won't let you do this. I won't let you control me."

Her mother's smile faltered, just for a moment. But then, she straightened, eyes cold and calculating once more. "You have one chance to bring him to me, Suisei. Don't make me take matters into my own hands. I don't make threats. I make promises."

Suisei's entire body was tense, the weight of her mother's ultimatum crashing down on her. Her mind screamed at her to fight back, but a cold dread gripped her heart.

She glanced at Hikaru, whose gaze never left her. He was ready to fight by her side, but she knew this battle wasn't just about blading. This was her family. Her past. And it was tearing her apart.

"Suisei," Hikaru's voice broke through her spiraling thoughts. His hand reached out to hers, gentle but firm. "I'm here. Whatever happens next... I'm not leaving."

Her heart ached. She wanted to lean into him. To find the strength to fight back. But in that moment, all she could feel was the suffocating weight of her mother's presence, the unavoidable reality of the ultimatum she faced.
