The first rays of dawn filtered through the thin curtains, casting soft golden light across the room. Dazai stirred beside Y/N, his eyes fluttering open, only to find her already awake, sitting up in bed. Her expression was distant, a far cry from the tenderness of the night before.
Dazai stretched lazily, his usual teasing grin forming on his lips as he gazed at her. "Morning," he said softly, reaching out to brush a strand of hair from her face. "You're up early."
Y/N didn't respond immediately. Instead, her eyes were trained on the far wall, her thoughts a million miles away. She barely noticed the touch, which made Dazai frown slightly. Normally, she would have smiled back or made some dry, teasing remark. But this morning... she felt far away, like she was hiding behind an invisible wall.
"Hey," he said again, his voice softer this time, laced with concern. "What's going on in that head of yours?"
Y/N finally turned to look at him, but the warmth that usually shone in her eyes was missing. She offered a faint smile, the kind that didn't reach her eyes. "It's nothing. Just... tired."
Dazai knew her better than that. He could sense when she was pulling away, and this was one of those times. His chest tightened. They had just shared such an intimate moment the night before — her vulnerability, her apologies, and their fragile, unspoken agreement to move forward together. But something was wrong now, and it felt like she was slipping through his fingers again.
"I don't believe you," Dazai said bluntly, though his tone was gentle. "You're not 'just tired,' Y/N. What's really going on?"
Y/N's fingers twitched, her heart pounding in her chest. She could feel his gaze, sharp and probing, cutting right through her, just like always. But the truth was something she couldn't face. Not now. Not after everything they had shared.
She had made a deal with Fyodor — a deal Dazai didn't know about. She had told herself it was for the greater good, to protect him, to protect the Agency, but deep down, she knew she was betraying him. Fyodor had a hold on her, and now, there was no turning back.
"I just need some space," she said quietly, her voice a little too flat. "I'll be fine, Dazai."
Dazai didn't press her further, though his heart was heavy with doubt. He nodded slowly, but the nagging feeling in his gut told him that something was deeply wrong. He had learned long ago not to force answers from her, especially when she wasn't ready to talk. But this—this felt like something far more dangerous than their usual arguments.
A few hours later, Y/N sat at her desk in the office, staring blankly at the paperwork in front of her. She hadn't done a single thing all day, her mind too cluttered to focus. Dazai, who had been keeping an eye on her from across the room, noticed immediately. Y/N never let things like this slide — it was completely out of character for her to sit idle.
Kunikida passed by, glancing at her with a frown. "Y/N, you haven't even touched those reports. Is everything okay?"
Y/N didn't answer, just nodded absently, her gaze still vacant.
Dazai's unease deepened. Something had happened, something that had made her shut down like this. He opened his mouth to confront her, but before he could, the office door creaked open.
And in stepped Fyodor.
The air in the room turned icy the moment he entered. Every member of the Agency turned toward him, their bodies immediately tensing. Fyodor's presence was like a dark cloud rolling in, bringing with it the threat of an approaching storm. His calm, composed smile only added to the unease.
Dazai's eyes narrowed as he stood up, his hand subtly moving to the pocket where he kept his gun. "What are you doing here, Fyodor?"
Fyodor's cold eyes flicked to Dazai briefly before settling on Y/N, who still hadn't moved from her chair. "I've come to retrieve what's mine," he said smoothly, stepping further into the room.
A ripple of shock went through the Agency, but Dazai's reaction was the most visceral. His heart slammed against his ribcage as he glanced sharply at Y/N, who had gone deathly pale.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Dazai asked, his voice low and dangerous, every muscle in his body tense.
Fyodor smiled, the kind of smile that sent chills down everyone's spine. "Y/N and I made a deal. I'm simply here to collect on her end of the bargain."
Dazai's blood ran cold. "What deal?"
Y/N finally stood, her hands trembling slightly as she stepped forward. "Dazai—"
"No," he cut her off, his eyes flashing with fury. "You promised me, Y/N. You promised you wouldn't keep things from me anymore."
Her breath hitched, her chest tightening painfully at his words. "I had to, Dazai. It was the only way—"
"The only way?" Dazai's voice cracked with anger and hurt, his gaze locked onto her. "You went behind my back, to Fyodor of all people?"
The weight of his words crashed down on her, and for the first time since Fyodor's arrival, Y/N felt truly ashamed. She had made a terrible mistake — she had broken her promise to Dazai, the man who had stood by her side through everything.
"I didn't want to drag you into this," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I thought... I thought I could handle it."
Fyodor watched the exchange with quiet amusement, clearly enjoying the chaos he had stirred.
Dazai's hands clenched into fists. "So, what did you promise him, Y/N? What was worth betraying me?"
Before she could respond, Fyodor spoke up, his tone light and mocking. "She promised me her cooperation. In exchange for her safety — and yours."
Dazai's gaze snapped back to Fyodor, his fury barely contained. "You're lying."
Fyodor shrugged, unfazed by the accusation. "Believe what you want. But I hold the cards now."
Y/N stepped forward, her voice weak. "It's true, Dazai... I made a deal with him to protect you. To protect everyone. I thought I could keep you out of it, but..."
Dazai stared at her, his expression a mixture of heartbreak and betrayal. "You didn't trust me."
Her heart shattered at the pain in his voice. "I'm sorry."
Fyodor's smile widened as he stepped toward Y/N, extending his hand. "It's time to go."
Dazai took a step forward, his eyes blazing with defiance. "You're not taking her anywhere."
But Y/N placed a hand on Dazai's arm, stopping him. "Dazai, please... this is the only way. I made my choice."
The room was thick with tension, and in that moment, Dazai realized that he was powerless to stop her. Y/N had made her decision, and despite every fiber of his being screaming at him to fight for her, he knew he couldn't. Not without putting her in even more danger.
Y/N met his gaze one last time, her eyes filled with regret. "I'm sorry," she whispered again, her voice breaking.
And with that, she turned and walked toward Fyodor, her heart heavy with the weight of the broken promises and the love she feared she had just lost.
As the door closed behind her, Dazai stood frozen, his world unraveling before him.
This wasn't over. Not by a long shot.
