"Bruce??" she sat up a little straighter. Worry made her voice shake. "Bruce, what's wrong?"
"Where in the City are you?"
"Downtown?"
He cursed again.
"Micah, you need to find a basement or go down to the subway NOW!"
"Bruce, you're scaring me. What's wrong?"
"Don't ask! Just-"
The call ended abruptly and her mind couldn't think straight.
Holy crap! Bruce is here. He just called.
She quickly unbuckled but before she could ask the taxi driver to pull over there was an ear-splitting crack that tore through the air.
The taxi slammed into the car in front of them.
Micah's head whipped forward and crashed into the partition. Her vision went black for a few seconds and she could feel pain searing through her head. As her vision slowly came back she touched her forehead and her fingers were red with her blood.
"Miss? Are you okay?"
"Uh-huh..." she replied in a daze. She fumbled for the door handle and climbed out.
"Where are you going?" the driver called after her but her attention was pulled to the sky.
It was ripping open over her head. The driver got out of the car and pulled off his ball cap.
"What is that?" he asked no one in particular.
But as if the sky opening above wasn't horrifying enough, seeing giant creatures pour through was enough to make Micah feel like she was going to throw up.
Screams of sheer horror erupted around her and the street quickly turned into madness. She looked at the taxi driver andshe dug into her purse to pay him. He shook his head no and jumped back into his car before trying to drive the way they just came.
For half a second she almost ran after him for her suitcase but then a barbaric howl echoed above the street. Micah looked up and wiped away the blood that trickled close to her eyes.
Smaller aircraft flew overhead and whoever piloted them also rained down fire on them.
Bolts and bursts of light scattered around her and she thought about what Bruce had told her. Go underground.
She scanned the road around her and spotted a staircase going below. She ran to it but already there was a flood of people swarming below.
Fear and instinct told her to not follow lest she be crushed to death in a cement tube. She ran inside the closest buildingand what she saw was already people flipping tables to hide behind them. She helped the others bar the door as best as they could and she slowly back towards the back of the small cafe.
Within minutes these horrible-looking creatures ran down the road in front of the cafe. They were shooting guns that looked like something off Halo.
Micah's brain kicked into high gear and went into the kitchen. She'd watched enough TV shows and movies to know behind every building in New York was an alleyway. She had to run. She knew she couldn't stay here just waiting for a fatal shot to end it for her.
Running through the kitchen she spotted a large cleaver-shaped knife on the counter left behind in the panic. She grabbed it and tightened her purse so it sat snuggly across her purse. She pulled out her phone and shoved it into her bra before she slowly opened the back door.
An alleyway. Just like she hoped for.
Micah looked both ways before stepping out into the open air. She went in the direction she hoped was away from the main roads. She had no idea where she needed to go but she felt like a sitting duck in the cafe.
