Wilbur was already asleep next to me. I had been trying for a while to go to sleep myself, but I just wasn't able to.
I was still thinking about the weird dream that I had. I was being held by a vine and I couldn't move. It had squeezed me tight, and that hurt. Wilbur couldn't hear me.
That dream scared me. What if that actually happens?
Wilbur had magic, so he would be able to save me if that happened, right? I groaned in frustration. Even though the ground was very comfortable, I still wasn't able to sleep.
Maybe Wilbur could help me with that.
I gently shook him to wake him up. "Huh? What happened? Was I having another nightmare?" He asked. "No." I reassured him. "I just can't sleep." "Do you want me to use my magic again?" He asked. "Sure. I don't want to be tired tomorrow because I didn't get any sleep."
Wilbur placed his hands on my forehead and I felt a familiar tiredness flow into me. The magic was working again. It felt nice.
I fell asleep before I could say thank you to Wilbur. I wasn't even sure if he actually fell back asleep himself.

I woke up to find Wilbur sitting next to the pond, drinking from it. "Good morning sleepyhead. I guess the magic let you sleep in." He also had a sketchbook next to him.
"Well you seem happy this morning." I responded. "I always am." He reached into his bag and tossed me a muffin. "Here, eat this." I ate the muffin. It wasn't much of a breakfast, but it would have to do for now. I got up and stretched. "Sorry I woke you up last night."
"It's fine. I would rather you wake me up than you not get any sleep." He looked at the sky. The clouds were back. "I think we should get moving soon."
We started to pack everything up, even though it wasn't much. Wilbur quickly put the sketchbook inside of his bag. I wondered what was inside of it. I wasn't going to look at it because I didn't want to invade his privacy.
We traveled through the rest of the forest on our second day. We talked to each other along the way, feeling nice to have each other's company. Wilbur was taking note of most of the plants he found. I had to admit, they did look pretty cool, if not evil.
Wilbur walked in front of me, and I could see flowers trailing behind him. I knew he was thinking of me.
Those flowers always appeared whe I was around. I noticed that they were usually the color of something I was wearing. After we hung out more, the flowers stopped appearing as much. But sometimes, when it was quiet, and he was lost in thought, the flowers would sometimes appear, though they were usually small. That's when I knew he was thinking of me.
That was one of the reasons I was actually glad that I didn't have magic, because I didn't want it to give away my thoughts and feelings. I definitely didn't want some kind of voice saying, "Hey Wilbur, I actually really like you and want to be your boyfriend!"
No, I didn't want that.
We slowly began to approach what seemed like the edge of the forest. After being in those woods for a day and a half, I was kind of tired of seeing trees everywhere.
We approached the small town of Woodpine. The buildings were all made of wood and stone, and looked slightly old. We found a place called 'The gray wolf inn and tavern.' where we would be staying for the night. Before we went in though, we wanted to explore the town first.
Everything still looked dark, and evil.
The few people that were outside seemed to be arguing with each other.
"Watch where you're going, idiot!"
"You're the one who knocked over my cart!"
"Your fruits are rotten anyways."
Wilbur handed me a cloak from his backpack. "Wear this." He told me. "Why?" I asked.
"I don't think anyone here would like seeing a human. Put this on for right now." He handed me the cloak, and I put it over my head, hiding my ears. It actually made me slightly warmer. "There. Now all we have to do is tell everyone you're just short." He said, laughing.
"Hey! I'm not short!" I argued.
"Right now you are, compared to everyone else. And besides, I'm taller than you."
I hate that he had to rub it in. But even so, I could never actually hate him. And I doubt that he would hate me.
After looking around and seeing everything we could, we decided to head over to the inn. We were pretty tired from walking and wanted an actual place to sleep.
We walked in, greeting the innkeeper at his front desk. He was just as tall as Wilbur, with a large beard. He just looked like any old innkeeper.
"H-Hi, we would like a room, please?" Wilbur seemed a little nervous. It was his first time talking to anyone in this new realm. "Sure." The man grabbed one of the keys from behind the counter. "Here you go." He said, placing it on the table.
"Thanks." Wilbur said, lifting it up with his magic.
"No! You can't do that here!" The man said, fear in his voice. "W-Why not?" Wilbur asked. I was also confused. Was magic not allowed inside of buildings, or was it just not allowed here?
"Are you two stupid or something? Magic has been banned everywhere for years!" He said.
I was surprised. Why would a place that Wilbur said was full of magic, have magic banned?
"We're sorry sir, we'll try to remember next time." I told him. "Whatever, just don't do it again."
We walked off to try and find our room. "Young boys, they don't know any better." The innkeeper muttered behind us.
Wilbur looked at the number on the key. "Room 102. That's this way." We eventually found the door with the number 102 on it. Wilbur opened the door with the key and walked inside. There was one bed, sitting in the middle of the room, with a nightstand next to it. I guess they didn't have any rooms with two beds available.
"What was that all about?" I asked. "You said that your dreams showed you a bright and happy world but instead we got a dark and depressing one where we can't use magic! Why did I even come with you?" This place wasn't at all like he said. I was starting to get pretty mad, and frustrated.
"I-I'm sorry... I didn't know, I just wanted to use my magic. I'm s-so sorry..." I could see tears forming in the corners of his eyes.
Oh no. Why did I yell at him? Now he's upset.
"Hey, hey. You don't need to apologize. I'm the one who should be saying sorry to you. I didn't mean to yell at you."
"I still kind of feel like this is my fault."
"Well it isn't. None of this is. Your dreams just told you to come to this place, and you didn't really have a choice. Nothing is your fault."
He wiped the tears away from his eyes. "Th-thanks." We both sat down on the edge of the bed. "I think I should tell you something." Wilbur said. "I haven't exactly told you everything."
He explained how his dreams didn't just show him the better version of this place, it also showed him the state that this place was in now. He told me how he saw twins who seemed to be royalty and also looked like him. "So the reason why this place is like this is because someone took over?" I asked. "I think it's one of the twins, because I saw him on the throne." He said.
"Was he in the last nightmare you had?" I asked. "Yeah. I'm still glad you woke me up from that one." He said with a smile on his face.
We both started getting ready for bed. I was tired and wanted to get some sleep. Wibur was brushing his teeth in the bathroom.
"Do you think..." I paused for a second. "That you're related to one of those twins?" I asked. "If I am, I hope it's not the evil one."
When he was done in the bathroom, he laid down next to me. Wilbur turned off the light, and I could hear him fall asleep very quickly.
But I just couldn't fall asleep.
I realized I didn't exactly have any family here. What if his family didn't accept me as a human? What if they forced me to go back to the human realm? These thoughts circled my mind until I fell asleep.
