We had arrived at the town of spirits village. It felt like the train, filled with magic and wonder. After spending a lot of time with Wilbur, I kind of knew what magic felt like.
It was also like the train in the way that everyone was staring at us. Someone came up to us. “Are you two humans?” They asked. “No, no. These are magic costumes.” Wilbur answered. I guess he was playing into the human disguises trick. And they seemed to believe us.
“You can take them off if you would like. This is a safe space after all.”
“No thanks. We would rather keep them on. We’re not going to stay for very long.”
These people looked different from Wilbur, yet they seemed to have magic like him. Why did he look human if he was supposedly one of them?
“You can stay at my place if you would like. I only have one bed in my guest bedroom though.” The person introduced themselves as Moss, and led us over to their house. They showed us the guest bedroom. “This is where you will be staying for the night. Please feel free to join any activities if you wish. I will leave you two alone.” Moss left, leaving us in the bedroom by ourselves.
We placed down our backpacks. Wilbur looked at me. “So, do you wanna see what there is to do here?”
“Sure!”

A few hours later, we were walking around town, seeing everything there was to see. Wilbur was able to turn the money he had saved up into the currency they used. He did steal some from his parents, but they didn’t suspect anything from their perfect child.
These people have been here for a while, so they understand plenty of human stuff. I just had to pretend I was one of them until we could figure out what to do next.
I also gave him some of my money. We would be sharing most of the stuff we had.
I went into a shop while Wilbur waited outside so I could find something. I found a small stone frog. I also wanted to get Wilbur something, as a gift to give to him later.
I noticed a bracelet with a flower charm over in the corner of the shop. It seemed perfect for him, because whenever I'm around him flowers seem to grow underneath him. I grabbed it and purchased the two items. I put the bracelet in my pocket, because I didn’t want Wilbur to see it just yet. I was probably going to give it to him after all of this was over and I was certain that he felt the same.
“Did you get what you wanted?” He asked. “Yep!” I showed him the small frog. “That is adorable.”
We were going to head back to Moss’s house to get some rest when we heard some music coming from the town square. “I wonder what that’s all about.” Wilbur said. We decided to check it out.
We walked over to find that people were playing music in the square. Others were dancing to it, while some were just listening. I started bobbing my head to the beat. “Wow, this music is good!” Wilbur said, now dancing. I was just standing there awkwardly.
“C’mon! Dance with me!” He said. “I can’t dance.” I told him.
“Sure you can!” He grabbed my hand and pulled me to where everyone else was dancing. my hand and pulled me out to where everyone else was dancing. “Just try. Please?”
“Ugh, fine. I’ll try.”
There we were, dancing the night away with each other. All I could think about was how great it was to still be with Wilbur, and that I wasn’t left behind.

After all the dancing and fun we had, we headed back to finally get some rest. I was feeling pretty tired. Wilbur promised that tomorrow we would find out more about what we were supposed to do. The necklace hadn’t spoken to him in a while, but he just told me that he needs to actually ask it something in order for it to talk.
We both put our pajamas on and laid down on the bed, our backs facing each other. I desperately wanted to comfort him, but I couldn’t. It seemed like he was still slightly on edge after that nightmare he had.
Wilbur reached over to the nightstand and turned off the light. They were somehow able to use magic like electricity in order to power things in this town.
“Goodnight Nicholas.” He said.
“Goodnight.” I responded.
We both fell asleep, feeling nice and warm under the blankets.
I woke up to find myself floating in space. I was in a dream. But I couldn’t move.
I looked around to see that a vine was squeezing me tight, keeping me in place. I was stuck.
I tried calling out to Wilbur, but I couldn’t speak. Nothing came out when I tried to scream. He couldn’t hear me. “Oh no, Wilbur…”
I woke up, covered in sweat. It wasn’t real. I was so glad that it wasn’t. I looked over to see that Wilbur was still next to me, sleeping. I hope he didn’t have any nightmares, because that last one was scary.
He turned over, and I could see how calm he looked. It was nothing compared to how he looked the night before, when I had woken up to see him tossing and turning and gripping onto his sheets for dear life. He actually looked kind of adorable when he was like this. I guessed that he didn’t have any nightmares, since he looked peaceful.
It didn’t last long though. His eyes opened a minute later, and he woke up. “Good morning sleepyhead.” I said to him. “Ugh, please don’t call me that.” Wilbur groaned. “It’s too early for this.”
We both got dressed and went into the kitchen because we smelled something good. Moss was there, making pancakes. “Hey! Do you guys want these for breakfast? I made these for you!” We both said yes and sat down, and she handed us plates with pancakes on them. They looked and tasted good.
“I’m going to water the plants in my garden.” Moss went out back, leaving me with Wilbur. “So, have you asked the necklace anything yet?” I asked him.
“No, not yet. Let’s see if it’ll tell me anything.” Wilbur asked the necklace what he was supposed to look for now. He waited a few seconds and then said we were supposed to be looking for a portal made out of stone.
Moss came back inside. “How are you guys enjoying the pancakes?” They asked. “They’re pretty good!” I said.
“I’ve been meaning to ask you something.” Wilbur said. “Go ahead.”
“Do you know anything about a portal around here?”
“Do you mean the portal everyone came through many years ago?”
I could see that Wilbur was looking a little nervous. “Well, it’s just that we came through the portal when we were very young and wanted to see it again, since we don’t really remember it.” I guess that was the best response he could come up with at that moment. It was actually a really good cover. “Sure, I could take you to see it.” They said.
After we finished eating breakfast, Moss led us to the portal. It was completely surrounded by trees. It was definitely made of stone, and didn’t look lit. “This portal has been here since the creation of our realm. It was a way to escape if something were to go wrong in the brighter realm. Once every few years, the Royals open the portal and learn some things about humans. They aren’t here, so we had to learn everything ourselves. The Mother of light gave us this portal, or so they say. It’s a shame we have to hide ourselves from these humans.
I instantly thought of myself, and how I was a fraud. I didn’t have any magic powers on me. I was faking the fact that I did, and in that moment I felt Moss could see through me.
Also, who was the Mother of light?
“Of course, not everyone made it through the portal.” They said, like we were automatically supposed to know what happened. “And all of us have been hiding ever since. I’m not sure what happened to everyone else on the other side.” They looked sad, as if there was something on the other side that they left behind.
“Wow, I’ve never realized that. I’m so sorry.” Wilbur said. “Don’t worry, we all have lives here now. We just hope that everyone else is okay.”
Wilbur approached the stone structure, touching the portal like he was fascinated with it. To be honest, it did look pretty cool.
Suddenly, it started glowing. A bright yellow light filled it, and suddenly, it was open again.
“Y-you… You opened the portal…”
“Does this mean we have to go through it or…” I asked. “I guess so.” Wilbur said.
We headed back to the house to grab our stuff because none of it was brought with us. We couldn’t leave without it. Moss was in awe the entire time, though I could feel that there was something that she wasn’t telling us.
There we were, in front of the portal, about to make the biggest change in our lives.
“Have a safe journey!” Moss says to us. Wilbur grabs my hand. “Let’s do this. Together.”
