"You sure you don't want to grab some food?"
I was currently walking JJ to his house, as I didn't exactly want to go home yet. I wanted a little more peace before I went.
"Yeah, I'm not hungry."
But I was.
He looked at me skeptically before he thankfully dropped the matter.
My back aches from the mere weight of my schoolbag. I got dozens of presents but that didn't cheer me up. I'm grateful, yes, but I just don't need physical presents. JJ and I chatted for a while. Mostly about our upcoming soccer match and how jealous he was, because he never gets as many presents as I do. "The girls love me," I joked, earning myself an elbow to my ribs.
"Not all, though. Perhaps, Naomi didn't get you one?" he was now the one smirking. I didn't respond. I caught him smiling from the corner of my eye. Sometimes, JJ was really agitating.
Suddenly, I felt a sharp pain in my lower back. I stopped abruptly and hissed under my breath. Fuck.
"You okay?" JJ quickly asked "What happened?"
I shook my head and answered, "I'm good. Isn't that your house? I need to go home."
He stared at me for an unsettling amount of time, before he mumbled a response and walked towards the gate to his house.
I stood there, waiting for the pain to stop when my phone rang. It was a message.
JJ: At the cinema, outside of the city. Birthday surprise ;)
Me: See you there.
The pain was tolerable when I started walking home. Home where people seek peace and relaxation.
The same home I loathed.
I slid the house key into the lock, twisted the key sideways and stepped into hell.
"Why are you late, stupid brat? Give me that bag," that's the first thing I got greeted with when I entered the house. My father ripped the bag from my back and zipped it open. He then skimmed through the stuff and grabbed all the envelopes that could possibly contain money, chocolates and sweets.
"You don't need those, kid." he spat in my face.
"But, it's my birth-" I proceeded to say before he grabbed me by my shirt and growled, "How dare you talk back to me, huh? Missed the belt much, brat?"
I developed such fear and fury for this man, that being so close to his face almost made me throw up. He was squeezing my throat, hard. I clamped my hands over his, trying to get him off, which was no easy task as the man was double my size and weight. "Wha.. di..I. to you.." I strangled out.
He stared at me for a while before his grip tightened. "You're not worthy of knowing shit!" my father growled. I couldn't breath, couldn't think. The world was blank. My vision blurred. "Yo.. mot... fu..er," he let me go. I urged air down my lungs. I was breathing hard. My chest ached. I was free.
