"I am not moving away, mum"
"I'm sorry, honey. Your father found a really good job which he can't decline. We're moving away. End of discussion."
I guess I don't have much of a choice here.
Me, Naomi Garcia, seventeen years old, the girl that just accommodated to this toxic environment, has to move away and start all over.
As a deaf person, I can say life is hard. Many people forget that I still have my other senses, like my eyesight or my sense of speaking.
Yes, I can see you giving me weird looks and yes, I can still speak freely.
Me preferring sign language is a whole different thing.
Why do I prefer sign language? I guess I don't exactly know.
Everyday I stumble upon people that pity me. Which is the absolute worst. Of course there are people that find me not hearing quite amusing. Well, they're just a bunch of jerks.
Another fact about me is, I can lip read amazingly. Which of course, has its perks. It makes my everyday life a bit easier.

"That's not right, Luis. You have to bring your pointer and middle finger to your thumb. "Like this." I said to my younger brother. "Good job! That's 'no' in sign language."
"That's funny. You and mum know sooo many secret hand signs. When I'm older, I will learn allll of those too!" Luis loved to emphasize words.
Besides my younger brother Luis, I also have an older brother. His name is Nathan and he's one year older than me and ten years older than Luis.
Nathan is a real pain in the ass. Just like all older brothers he annoys the hell out of me, but when mum told him I was deaf, he immediately started learning sign language. I guess he isn't too bad.
I left Luis' room and went straight to mine. Before I could open the door someone tapped on my shoulder. It was mum.
"Don't forget to tidy your room and start packing clothes. You know we're leaving on Friday." Mum always talked in sign with me. At home, in public, basically everywhere. I gestured a simple 'OK' and went into my room.
Great, now I got to clean this mess up. Easier said than done. My room was the messiest of messiest rooms, which is probably the case because I rarely leave it.
I think I should start with the dirty Laundry. Most of them are oversized hoodies, way too large sweatpants and t-shirts. That's kind of my everyday outfit.
I picked them out one by one and threw them into the laundry bag. Now that that's done, I just have to clean the dirty mugs and plates.
Of course, the move-out will take a lot more time, getting all our things out and into the new house, but I'll worry about that later.
I really don't wanna go. I mean, this city is no paradise either but I kind of grew into it. Most people know I'm deaf so they don't pull weird stuff like people did in the past. New people means new problems and I really don't have the nerves for problems.
I stood up and walked to my laptop, a.k.a. my prized possession. I clicked onto the Email Icon and scrolled through my newest Emails.
Mother did not do that.
I stomped to the kitchen where my mum was currently making lunch.
"Mom", I said agitated, "why did you sign me into a literal sports school. You know I cannot hear! What about my social anxiety? Me playing a team sport while also having to go to a normal school? No way!" I signed aggressively. I felt like if I had talked any more than one word, it would have come out way different than planned.
"Honey, relax. Do you remember playing in the handball club when you were seven? You were a natural. Come on, Naomi. Give it a try. I heard there are teachers who can sign too!" she said much too calm.
Without any further comment I stomped back into my room, where there are no problems, no worries and no aggravating people.

2 months later
"Sweetheart, look. Everything is done. We finished this quicker than I thought", said my dad. "It's lovely, isn't it?", mum answered, "kids, school starts on Monday. Luis, no toys at school. Nathan, stop trying to flirt with every female you see I got multiple ca-" "Mum, stop!" "Hahaha, what a loser" I said. Nathan gave me a confused look which you could have mistaken with a glare.
"What, how did you hear that?" What a dumbass. "I read your lips. Duh." The sass was much needed. "Anyways," my mom continued, "just don't cause any trouble on your first day. It's an ordinary school so have fun. The headteacher told me you can choose your sport clubs later on. Luis, sadly your school doesn't have such activities. You're a little bit too young." Phew, great mum doesn't talk fast. That was a whole lot of work to understand. That's one bad thing about not signing.
I slump into my new bedroom, which luckily isn't as bad as I thought. I need rest. Desperately.
Maybe the kids at school won't be too bad?
