I rushed to my first class of the term, iced coffee sloshing in my hand and books tucked under my arm.
I stopped at the door and checked it was the correct room before hesitantly opening it.
Heads turned as the door creaked open, and a tall woman at the front of the room looked at me and smiled."Hi, sorry I'm late," I said, panting slightly from my race to the class.
"That's no problem, please find a seat," her eyes gleamed with a sort of calm-yet-fiery energy that expressed such a mysterious aura.
I nodded and smiled, quickly finding an empty seat and exhaling. Despite the slight public humiliation, everything was fine.
"Welcome, class, to Advanced Literature," the woman smiled as she spoke, hands clasped together as she stood confidently at the centre of the room. "I'm so excited to get to know all of you, and share my knowledge. I am your professor for the term, and you may address me as such. Now, I would love to know more about you, so as childish as it may seem, I would love us to begin with an icebreaker!"
As the professor began to explain the activity, I found myself becoming more and more drawn to her. The way she moved, her natural polite charm and patience.
A couple boys sat behind me were laughing quietly about something, and I heard a couple words.
"Yo, why is Teach low-key fiiiine."
I rolled my eyes and kept my focus on the professor, who unfortunately for the boys, had overheard.
"Do you have something to share with the class, boys?"
They giggled and shoved each other as heads turned their way, until one of them piped up.
"You single?"
I could've sworn she'd rolled her eyes.
"I'm lesbian, boys."
My eyes widened slightly and I began to subconsciously chew the end of my pencil.
"And quite frankly, I would think that's a rather inappropriate question for the moment, the icebreaker hasn't even begun! However I can see your eagerness, so why don't you start us off?"
I chuckled quietly as the boys groaned but reluctantly began the icebreaker.
My focus remained on her, however. The way she looked you directly in the eyes through her glasses, or the way she effortlessly controlled the class.
The game went around the class as everyone introduced themselves, until it was at me. My mouth opened and closed like a goldfish, due to not having prepared.
"Uh... gay?"
A few giggles sounded around me and I blushed.
"Not that there's anything wrong with that, but the question was about your name, age and anything else you want people to know, dear," the professor smiled.
"Sorry... my names Red, I'm 19... uh, I'm gay?"
"We heard, dear," she professor chuckled, her eyes sparkling.
I wanted to die.
The game moved on, circling around the classroom until it was over and time to begin the lesson.
