The morning air in Cunningham was heavy, thick with the promise of something unsettling.
The sun barely peeked through the dense clouds, casting the city in a muted gray. It felt like the calm before a storm—a storm the Dark Wave Force was now preparing to face head-on.
Lucas stood at the front of their headquarters, his thoughts already racing. The team had spent the night strategizing, pouring over every bit of information they had gathered.
Ryder had provided a wealth of knowledge, but even he didn't know much about The Beam—only that it was rumored to be hidden somewhere in the deep wilderness of the Wraith Mountains, far beyond the reaches of the city. Their best chance of finding it, Ryder had said, was to follow the ancient texts that described the artifact's power. But those texts were scattered, forgotten in ruins and lost archives, their meanings obscured by time.
"Alright," Lucas said, turning toward his team. They were gathered around a large map spread out across the table, each of them focused, determined. "The Wraith Mountains are days away by foot, and even with all of us, we're going to need more than just our powers. We need to be prepared for whatever comes our way. We can't afford to get caught off guard like we did last time."
Jamal, ever the quick thinker, was already flipping through a set of notes he'd taken earlier. "We need supplies," he said. "I'm talking food, water, and the right gear. If we're trekking through the mountains, it's going to be brutal."
Skyler added, "Not just supplies, but we need to figure out how to deal with anything that might be guarding The Beam."
Genesis rubbed her temples, the strain of her powers still lingering from their last battle. "We don't know what we're going to face out there. If there are creatures or traps—things designed to protect The Beam—we're going to need to think on our feet. We've been trained to deal with people, but The Beam might require a different kind of strategy."
Lucas nodded. "Agreed. We have to be ready for anything." He looked over to Ryder, who had been uncharacteristically quiet since the meeting began. "You've been through some crazy situations. Any advice?"
Ryder gave him a half-smile, his dark eyes gleaming with amusement. "I've been through worse than you can imagine. But I'm not here to babysit. You've got this. All I'm saying is—expect the unexpected. The Wraith Mountains have a way of... changing things. The landscape, the atmosphere, even the air you breathe. It's going to mess with you, mess with your powers."
Amai's brow furrowed. "Mess with our powers?"
Ryder leaned forward, his voice growing serious. "Yeah. Some places have a way of siphoning energy. Your abilities might not work the way you're used to out there. It could be a major disadvantage, or it could be a blessing. Just... keep your wits about you."
With that sobering thought hanging in the air, the team packed their gear and set off toward the Wraith Mountains. As they made their way out of the city, a deep sense of unease settled over them. It wasn't just the treacherous terrain they would soon be entering—it was what they would find at the end of their journey. The Beam was no ordinary weapon; its power was unknown, and its guardians were likely as mysterious as the artifact itself.
As the team crossed through the outskirts of Cunningham, the scenery slowly began to change. The rolling hills and forests of the city gave way to rougher, more barren land. Jagged rocks and sparse vegetation became the only signs of life. The air grew thicker, the silence more oppressive, as though the mountains themselves were watching them, waiting.
"This place feels wrong," Skyler muttered, her eyes scanning their surroundings. "I've been to some creepy places, but this... this is different."
"I agree," Genesis said, her voice tight. "Something's off here."
Ryder, always the pragmatist, remained calm. "Don't overthink it. Just keep moving."
But the team wasn't so easily reassured. Every crackling branch, every gust of wind felt like a threat, a sign that they were being watched. The further they traveled, the more palpable the tension became. They hadn't even reached the base of the mountains yet, and already it felt like something—or someone—was closing in on them.
Nightfall came faster than they had anticipated. They found a small clearing to set up camp, but even as they gathered around their fire, the sense of unease didn't lift. Amai was the first to voice what they were all thinking.
"Something's out there," she said, her voice a whisper. "I can feel it."Ryder raised an eyebrow. "You sure it's not just the mountains getting to you? You're all on edge."
But even he couldn't hide the wariness in his gaze as he scanned the darkening landscape. It wasn't normal. There was something lurking in the shadows—something that didn't want them to get any closer to their goal.
As the night wore on, the winds picked up, carrying with them a strange, unsettling sound. It was distant at first, barely a whisper on the wind. But soon it grew louder, almost like a chant. A low, rhythmic hum, as though the very earth beneath them was alive, breathing, pulsing with some ancient energy.
"I don't like this," Jessica muttered, her eyes darting around the clearing. "That sound... It's coming from all around us."
Before anyone could respond, the ground beneath them trembled. The air crackled with an eerie energy, and suddenly, from the darkness, shapes began to emerge. Figures cloaked in shadow, their forms indistinct but undeniably threatening, moved toward them.Jamal's heart raced, his mind already calculating escape routes.
"What the hell are these things?"
Ryder's hand shot up, signaling for the team to stay alert. "No idea. But we need to handle this fast. Stay close, work together."
Genesis's hand shot out, her energy flaring as she attempted to influence the minds of the shadowy figures, but they seemed immune to her powers. The shadows swirled and flickered, evading her influence.
"Not good," she hissed.
The shadows lunged forward, and just as the team braced themselves for impact, Lucas drew his katana. It hummed with ancient energy, a power that he had yet to fully tap into, but something told him tonight would be the night it showed its true potential.
"We can do this," Lucas said, voice low, determined. "Together."
The shadows closed in, but they were no match for the force—at least, not yet. As they prepared for battle, Lucas couldn't shake the feeling that they were being tested. This was just the beginning. The mountains had only begun to reveal their secrets, and the real fight had only just started.
Live and learn, Lucas thought. Live and learn.
