Time is one of the most mysterious and profound aspects of existence. It governs our lives, shapes our experiences, and holds the essence of past, present, and future within its unseen flow. In the realm of science and philosophy, the concept of time and the notion of time travel have fascinated human thought for millennia. From the Vedic scriptures of ancient India to modern theories of physics, time has been perceived not just as a measure of change but as an enigma waiting to be unraveled.
वयं यत्नामानं ते नास्त्ये को भवन्ति ना कश्चिति। यादृच्छि कालस्य स्मृति, यात्नमिति प्रतिभासित।।
(Translation: Time, indeed, is an unfathomable ocean wherein the past, present, and future merge into one. The wise seek its essence, yet it remains ever-elusive.)
The Linear and Cyclical Nature of Time
Western thought has long held time to be linear, moving relentlessly forward like an arrow, from the past to the future. This perception is evident in the works of Newton, where time flows uniformly and independently of the observer. In contrast, Indian philosophy, steeped in its ancient texts, views time as cyclical—a series of vast epochs called yugas, repeating in a cosmic dance that embodies creation, preservation, and dissolution.
समुद्रष्टि काले वा योगां क्रियाते। क्षणेया जनमानां यो चक्रा वालंताम।।
(Translation: The wheel of time spins unceasingly; it shapes creation, sustenance, and destruction alike.)
This dual view of time is central to understanding how different cultures approach the concept of time travel. In linear time, time travel presents paradoxes—can one change the past without causing irreparable damage to the future? Can we visit moments that have already come and gone?
The Science of Time Travel
Modern physics, particularly Einstein's theory of relativity, introduced the idea that time is not absolute. Instead, it is interwoven with space, creating a four-dimensional fabric known as spacetime. The possibility of time travel arises from this fundamental shift in understanding. According to relativity, time dilation occurs when an object approaches the speed of light, suggesting that traveling vast distances at incredible speeds could allow a person to move forward in time.
However, traveling back in time poses its own complications and paradoxes, such as the famous grandfather paradox, where a time traveler's actions in the past could prevent their own existence. Theoretical physicists like Kip Thorne have explored wormholes—tunnels in spacetime—as potential passageways for moving across time. Still, these remain speculative, bound by unresolved questions of causality and energy requirements.
Time Travel in Indian Epics
The idea of time travel is not alien to Indian mythology. The Mahabharata, for instance, includes an episode where King Revaita visits the divine realm of Brahma and returns to find that centuries have passed on Earth. Such stories exemplify a profound understanding of the elasticity of time.
कालो। हि चलन्त्यं च नाभुन्यम। हुंतीं कालं। तत्वा रासाविन्नी स्मृति। सम्पद्यते।।
(Translation: Time flows ceaselessly, unfathomable and mysterious, manifesting in ways beyond mortal comprehension.)
The Philosophical Implications
The journey through time is not just a scientific question but a philosophical and ethical one as well. If time travel were possible, what responsibility would travelers bear toward past and future generations? Would altering past events, even with noble intentions, align with dharma, the cosmic law that sustains order and virtue?
In many ways, time travel, whether viewed through modern scientific theory or ancient mythology, serves as a reminder of our limited understanding of the universe. The act of contemplating time itself is a journey—one that stretches the boundaries of human knowledge and humbles us before the infinite.
काले। प्राभोति कुरुक्षेतारी। विनाशकुरुस्ना कालज्ञानं मृड्माणं प्रकशेत।।
(Translation: Wise are those who strive to understand time; yet, its true essence is but a whisper beyond the grasp of the mind.)
Hey Guys !
The next one is going to be the beginning of our book, and, in this book, I am going to give a spoiler/glimpse of the next chapter before releasing it.
