The car was driving through a familiar downtown. It was the city where Grace had been hiding.
"Where are you taking me now?"
"I'm on my way to the train station."
"yes?"
As soon as the words left his mouth, the truck stopped in a deserted alley near the train station. The man took out his wallet and handed Grace a few crumpled bills.
"Take it."
Grace hung on to the man without taking any money.
"Sir, don't let me go, but let Ellie go. What did that child do wrong that you're saying this to? If you want revenge, do it to me! Pull out her fingernails, cut off her fingers. If that doesn't satisfy you, kill her. Do whatever you want, but please, just send the child to her father!"
She held onto him and cried and begged, but the old man didn't even glance at her. He just picked up her coat from the floor and stuffed bills into his pockets.
"Sir, please. Please save my daughter."
The old man let out a long sigh and shook his head.
"mister!"
"I'm not letting you go."
"yes?"
"Besides, I have no intention of seeking revenge. Nancy is different though."
"Then why on earth are you doing this?"
"If you avenge Nancy, she will let you and your daughter go."
The man reached behind the seat, took something out, and placed it on Grace's lap. It was a violin case.
"I will take good care of your daughter, so just think about what you have to do."
As soon as she saw the violin case, Grace's hands began to tremble uncontrollably as she realized what the old man meant by revenge.
"When I hear that you have done it, I will place an ad in the National Tribune and tell you where and when to meet. That's all I have to say. Now go."
But Grace was frozen in place and couldn't move. The man who had been waiting, just looking out the car window, spoke to the scared child in a calm tone.
"It's not that difficult."
"... ... ."
The old man looked back at Grace and paused. His eyes shook as if he had seen something shocking, then he stopped and glared at Grace sternly.
"I hope it won't be difficult."
The old man forcibly dragged Grace out, who was still holding on.
"We won't be there anymore, so don't even think about reporting us. Don't provoke Nancy. Just do as I say and I'll give you your daughter back."
"You know better than anyone that that can't be true!"
"I will ensure your daughter's safety. I owe you something."
"How could you do such a cruel thing when you owed me your life!"
He pushed Grace away from him, picked up his coat and violin case, and climbed into the driver's seat.
"Mister! Mister, please!"
Bam. The door closed and the car started moving. I chased the truck, even though I knew it was pointless, until my legs gave out and I fell over.
"Sob... ."
Grace, who was sitting down, saw the violin case she had thrown down earlier. The contents inside were clearly visible through the gap where the buckle was unbuckled.
