After pressing her nose against his coat and blouse, she had to admit that Ellie wasn't lying. It seemed as though she had caught the scent of Norman's perfume and cigarettes.
"Mom, I'll go take a bath and come back."
Grace quickly went to the bathroom, filled the tub with water, took off all her clothes, and put them in the laundry basket. She had left her young daughter at home and was about to roll around on the hotel bed with a man. She was sitting in the warm water, feeling embarrassed, when Ellie came in through the half-open door.
There was a toy in her arms. The child still had a face full of heartache. The moment their eyes met as she entered the bathroom, Grace smiled, but her expression became even more frowning and she quickly lowered her gaze to the floor.
Oh my, I'm really done for.
Ellie sat down on the rug in front of the tub, this time with her back to it. Then she put her toy on the floor, so Grace asked.
"Why? Have you been missing your mom lately?"
"no."
"really?"
"... ... ."
"Did you take a bath?"
The golden back of her head nodded vigorously. No! I said, "No!" I was afraid I would have to take another bath, so I answered honestly. Seriously, me. Grace held back her laughter.
That's exactly what I wanted to see.
I couldn't stand it for a moment and followed you here.
Ellie's true feelings are revealed.
If you tease her like this, she'll get angry. Grace, the sinner, kept her mouth shut and watched the child wriggling her hands vigorously while holding the toy. What Ellie brought was a telephone that she had made with a wooden candle holder, wire, and yarn.
"Ring ring."
The child picked up a receiver made of paper and held it to her ear, making a ringing sound with her mouth. Grace pretended to hold the receiver to her ear as if there was a transparent phone in front of her.
"Ring ring, ring ring."
"Yes, this is the operator. Who is this?"
"It's Ellie."
"Oh, it's Ms. Ellie. Where should I take you today?"
"Mom, I'll make you a drink."
"Mom, I changed. What do you want?"
"Ellie, you're mad. You're so annoying!"
"omg!"
Grace had no choice but to laugh or cry at Ellie's bombshell announcement. In the end, she chose both.
"No. Sob, sob. Mommy is sad. Without our Ellie's kiss, Mommy can't even breathe."
"Then it's Mozza!"
Seriously, this kid has no mercy.
"Ellie, look at Mommy. Okay?"
Grace became genuinely anxious when Ellie didn't calm down after going to bed. She didn't want her child to go to bed with bad feelings.
"Huh, Ellie?"
How many times did I tap Ellie's shoulder with my fingertips as if I was knocking while she was lying down holding her stuffed rabbit? The child who had been silent until now asked in a sullen voice.
"Is Mom better at work than Ellie?"
"No, that can't be true."
Grace felt even more sorry because she wasn't late because she was working. Thinking back, she had said that she would play in the evening when she left the child at daycare. She didn't think much of it because she said it every day, but now she thought that it might have been a precious promise to the child.
