Insane, inside
The danger gets me high
Can't help myself
Got secrets I can't tell
-Play with fire by Sam TinneszThe Forgotten Pit is a cavernous arena, its entrance concealed deep within the underside of downtown Manali. The stale, humid air envelopes us as soon as we descend the dimly lit staircase. The low rumble of the crowd, a mix of anticipation and aggression, echoes up the concrete steps, a familiar soundtrack to our frequent visits.
Jason, my partner in crime, moves with the practiced ease of a regular.
As members of the SINS organization, we possess considerable authority and autonomy within this space. Jason nods toward a shadowy figure at the base of the stairs, a silent acknowledgment of our presence. The man, a hulking figure with a face etched with scars, returns the gesture with a curt nod.
The air hangs heavy as we walk the familiar hallway to The Fixer's cabin. We've shared countless quiet conversations in this dimly lit underworld, a bond forged over shared risks and mutual respect.
I stand outside his office and raise my hand to knock, but the door swings open with a creak. Jason, my often impulsive teammate, slips inside, a mischievous glint in his eye. Without a second thought, I follow suit, my apprehension momentarily forgotten.
The office is small, with a battered television in the corner that blares out a sports game, the sound muffled by the general chaos, and a worn-out green table surrounded by wannabe gangsters.
At the head of the table sits Fixer, the manager of this arena, a hulking figure with a scar that runs the length of his face. He is engrossed in the television with his boot-licking lackeys.
At the sound of the door opening, they all turn toward us.
"Hey, Fixer," I greet, my voice cheerful. "Long time no see."He lifts his gaze, offering Jason a curt nod of recognition, but when he spots me, a smirk plays on his lips.
"Long time, no see indeed. Hungry for a challenge already, huh?""Always," I reply, my eyes glinting. "I want a bigger fight, a real challenge."
Fixer leans back, considering my request.
"You know the risks, kid," he warns, his voice a low rumble. "One wrong move, and you could end up six feet under.""And you know me, old man. I'm not the one who'll shy away from a friendly tussle," I reply, batting my eyelids at him for emphasis.
He chuckles, the sound low.
"Alright, kid, I have just the right person for you. Wait in your booth; I'll handle it."
I hum in acknowledgement.True to his words, Fixer puts me up for the next fight. I don't know anything about my opponent, only that he's on a winning streak and they expect me to end it... so they push me up like their savior.
