Been through some bad shit, I should be a sad bitch
Who would have thought it'd turn me to a savage?
-7 rings by Ariana GrandeStephanie drops into the chair opposite me at our favorite coffee shop in the heart of Manali, right near The Market. This is our little ritual whenever we're home together.
"Are we going out tonight?" I ask, watching the blur of people and tourists passing by.
"Duh! You know, one last hurrah before you get locked down for good," she says, waggling her eyebrows at me suggestively.
"Firstly, it's a mission. Secondly, it's temporary."
"Sure, sweetheart. Whatever helps you sleep at night," she smirks, raising her eyebrows as she scrolls through her phone. I flag down the waitress to place our orders, already knowing we'll be here for a long while.
Suddenly her phone chimes; she casually scrolls through the contents, her eyes widening. "Damn! This will be fun," she says eagerly. I look at her doubtful; her idea of fun and my idea of fun are two totally different concepts.
She grins, showing me her phone. 'Black Out presents: The Night of Mischief,' with the theme: Masquerade Party. Registration link below.'
Black Out is a chain club business owned by our organization to legalize money. It has branches all across India. Since we're members of SINS, we have free rein within the club as long as boss approves of it.
"No!" I reply instantly.
"Come on, Zee." She gives me her best puppy dog eyes. "It's the perfect bachelorette celebration."
"Steph," I reprimand, but she just blinks at me innocently.
"Last night you were the one who was grumbling about a bachelorette."
Well... I did joke about a bachelorette to which Jason snickered and said, "We'll get you balloons." Didn't expect it to bounce back like this.
After that chat with Mr. Kapoor, I really needed a break. The old fox had a way of getting under my skin, always one step ahead, always knowing more than he should. I couldn't shake the feeling that he was playing some game I didn't fully understand. Maybe it was time to clear my head.
I could use a change of scenery, something to take my mind off all the tension. The club... yeah, it's the perfect distraction. Loud music, a drink in hand, and no one asking questions. Just a few hours where I can pretend, I'm not tangled in the web of things I can't control. It'll be fine - just what I need right now.
"Fine," I reply half-heartedly, knowing better than to try and win this battle. "One night. But we're keeping it low-key."
"Yes!" She pumps her fist in the air, then pulls me to my feet. "Let's get the sexiest outfit ever for the sexiest bride to-be."
