The night flew by. Dead to the world for hours, he didn't even remember turning over once through the night. The positioning of his body says he didn't either. The sun peering through the window woke him up around 9am and when he noticed this, he immediately shot up out of bed to check his phone. He didn't set his alarm the night before and saw missed calls from his boss. By this point, the adreneline had him well awake. He returned the call. It rang for a few moments before they picked up.
"Hey, it's Silas. I'm so sorry. I forgot to set an alarm once I hit the bed last nigh. I will be in as soon as possible," he said nervously as he moved towards the bathroom to get ready.
"Thank you for calling me to let me know. We will see you here in a bit."
They got off the call, and he got ready for work. When he walked downstairs he saw Jett sitting by the cat food. He grabbed her bowls off the porch and prepared her food. He was so happy to see her back to acting herself. He really missed having her inside. She purred as he placed the food in front of her. "Here you go, missy," he smiled and started heading out the door without any food for himself. He warmed up his car and headed into work with no incident. No weird energy, the radio performed as it is supposed too, no glowing eyes in the mirror. Just another normal day.
He walked into work nearly two hours late and tried to blend in without drawing too much attention to himself. This failed, she noticed. A couple hours passed by and it was time for lunch. Evelyn had been keeping minor tabs on Silas throughout the day and taking note of how he was acting. When they were both leaving to get lunch, she came up behind him and asked to join. Silas agreed and they headed to a diner across the parking lot.
It was a homey southern style restaurant with friendly workers and patrons enjoying their lunches. Far from romantic, but he couldn't help but feel good about getting out and doing something for the first time in forever. It was great to have a distraction from the distractions. They got a table and made small talk about work as they tried to pick out what they wanted to eat. Once their order was placed, Evelyn scooted in closer the table and whispered, "So are you going to open up and tell me about what is going on or are you still pretending to be okay?" She sipped on her sweet tea with a smile and waited for his response. Silas chuckled nervously, "I mean...what did you want to know?" 'It is so odd for an associate to want to know about my personal life. Does she know my ex? Is she trying to get some information out of me to bring back to her?' The toxicity from his ex still weighs down on everyday interactions.
Evelyn sat back in her seat and gave him a look similar to one a mother does whenever her child is being innocently stubborn. "I don't want to know anything specifically... I just know that it is hard going through a breakup," she trailed off looking around the room nervously.
Silas gave her a half smile, "I will be better once I get used to it all. It wasn't a good relationship so it's not like I'm so heartbroken."
Evelyn squinted at him. "My relationship wasn't good either...but I was still heartbroken. Ya know, I-, uhm, we deserved better than what we got. It's okay to mourn what we never had." She twirled her straw in the glass with her fingers and looked over at him.
Silas looked around the room before saying quietly, "I may have deserved it though. I work so much I never made time for her. I couldn't give her what she needed...so why did she need to give anything to me?"
Evelyn barely let him finish before saying, "No one deserves to be treated bad for working. You have to work," she smiled. "You know, we have worked together for a few years and we never really talked much out of work because I wanted to respect your relationship," she smiled and looked away, "I just want you to know that I am always here for you if you ever need to talk or just want a distraction." She chuckled and glanced back at him almost blushing.
The waitress came back with their food at this moment and Silas was nervously smiling. He didn't know exactly what to say so it as a good thing she walked up. "Thank you, it looks great." He got a burger and she got some chicken tenders. When the waitress walked away, he tried to change the subject. "It looks good," he started deconstructing his burger so he could put some condiments on it. She just watched him waiting for a response to her comment, but it didn't come. She nervously reached for a napkin and sat it in her lap, mostly watching him as she did so. She couldn't figure him out. Most guys would love to have a girl sitting across from them, but her was different.
Lunch went well, just some more small talk about things not important. Evelyn took the hint for the time being and left him alone about what he was dealing with. In all the time he has worked with her, she has never seen him go to lunch with other people. Silas was always a loner. He'd come to work, do his job, and then get to his next job. He didn't talk about much at all. He really was a mystery, but she couldn't help but want to get to the bottom of what's going on with him.
They finished up and got their drinks to go. As they walked back across the parking lot into work Evelyn stumbled over half on purpose. Silas was quick to reach over and grab her hands to keep her from falling and spilling her drink. Her face turned red and she thanked him. They were looking at each other for a second too long. Their eyes looking into each others and Silas smiled down at her. "Be careful," he smiled and then pulled away quickly after she seemed okay, "Don't want you to ruin your clothes halfway through the day."
He turned around and started walking a little in front of her. He looked down at his hand that he grabbed her with and where her open hand grabbed onto his wrist. They were red and burning again. He glanced around the parking lot as she caught up to walking with him. He couldn't sense Lilith's energy around at the moment, but he has a strong feeling that this is no longer a coincidence and she has something to do with this. Evelyn noticed how quickly he let go of her and started walking away. And then he glanced around the parking lot? 'Is he embarrassed of being seen touching me?' Her gaze stayed pretty low as they walked back into work together.
The day went as it should. Both of them on either sides of the room making quick glances at each other from time to time. He was stuck in his head thinking about why he burns every time she touches him. 'She doesn't seem to get hurt, so what's going on?' Evelyn can't stop the feeling of embarrassment. 'Why did I ask him to go to lunch? I am so stupid to think he'd be interested in me. Especially right now. He's clearly still wrapped up in his ex.' As the day ende, they both walked out to their cars, and he saw her leaving a little bit ahead of him, so he jogged to catch up.
"Hey, Evelyn. Thanks for having lunch with me. It was nice to get out of my little bubble for once," he smiled a genuine smile.
She stepped back a little and gave a forced smile, "Yeah, of course. Someone has got to look out for you, right?" She hit his arm gently with her fist, trying to joke around and make it not so serious.
Silas grabbed at his arm where she tapped him...it really hurt-- even though it shouldn't-- but he hid the pain. "You looking out for me? At least I know how to walk without tripping over air," he teased and started walked away.
Evelyn smiled and blushed a little while opening the door to her car. "Have a goodnight, Silas."
He waved with one hand, "You too, Evelyn."
