"So," Amelie began, popping up behind Gracie at her lunch table, "It's your birthday tomorrow."
"Yes, Gracie, it's your birthday tomorrow," Mia echoed.
"What are you doing here?" Dimi remarked, glaring at the other blonde girl.
"Be nice," Ellie pinched the skin on Dimi's upper arm, the shorter girl yelping in response.
Mia, Amelie and Gracie just left the two of them alone to bicker as usual.
"What are you doing for your birthday?" Amelie asked, sliding onto the bench next to Gracie, "It's your eighteenth, it has to be special."
"Nothing, I have a match and it'll probably be raining," Gracie sighed, "It's not a big deal anyway. I have a birthday every year."
"Uh, no," Amelie disagreed, "It is a big deal."
"I agree with Amelie on this," Mia stated, "I say we throw a party after your game."
"That's really not necessary," Gracie shook her head, picking at the dry sandwich on her plate.
"Well then at least let us come to your game," Amelie suggested.
"It'll be muddy. You'll get wet," Gracie informed, "You could come to literally any other one during the 364 days that Los Angeles doesn't rain."
"Nonsense, I'll be there," Amelie pouted, then pressed a gentle kiss to Gracie's cheek before skipping off back to her own lunch table.
Mia exchanged a confused glance with her friend, raising an eyebrow as she watched Gracie turn several gradually deepening shades of red.
"What was that?" Mia questioned with a smirk, causing Gracie to sink into her chair and bury her face in her hands.
Gracie was too flushed to speak, the skin of her face feeling hot beneath her palms as she hid behind them.
"I am so making you tell me about this later," Mia teased, conceding for now and turning her attention back to the food on her tray.

Gracie laced up her soccer shoes with a frustrated grunt. Shoelaces were one of the obscure things she hated the existence of. Why couldn't she use velcro forever? Her soccer jersey wouldn't remain dry for long, the rain was pouring on the field as expected. She hadn't expected to be playing on her eighteenth birthday, hadn't expected to be playing during her senior year at all, in fact.
She stepped out onto the field, the rain immediately soaking through her jersey and the headband she had on to keep her hair out of her face. She could feel it penetrate through to her skin and her scalp, cooling her down. Her team huddled in the middle of the field as they came face to face with their opponent, Oakwood Secondary.
She looked out across the asphalt surrounding the field. Contrary to what she believed would happen, much of the student body showed up to watch the first game of the season, despite the rain. Gracie scanned the crowd for the one fact she wanted to see most.
She had found her, in the front row of the middle of the field on the side of the parking lot, cheering at the top of her lungs, not seeming to mind the fact that her pristine blonde hair was being drowned by the rain, or the fact that her shoes were being muddied by the dirty field. Her deep green eyes glistened as she smiled and clapped.
