I awoke later that night to Pepper barking. I sat up, slightly confused. How was she forgotten outside? She was always either in my bed or in Mom and Hazel's bed.
I kicked off my blankets and walked through our dark, silent house to the sliding patio door leading to the back yard. Something felt off about her barking though--Pepper sounded scared.
"Pepper!" I called to her as I opened the door. Cold crispy fall air swirled around me, making me shiver. She whimpered from behind the shed in the darkest corner of our yard. It sounded like she was hurt. My chest tightened in anxiety. I walked over slowly and looked around behind the shed.
Pepper wasn't there.
I gasped and jumped back--that tall man from last night was there in the shadows. I saw a mouth form on his face, with black shark teeth jutting out in rows. A savage snarl emitted from deep in his throat.
He lunged--

I jolted awake.
