Leah lay on her back, staring up at the ceiling as the gentle hum of the fan filled the silence. Her LED lights cast a soft, hazy glow around the room, painting shadows on the walls. She glanced over at the digital clock on her dresser, its red numbers piercing through the darkness.
1:34 a.m.
She sighed, shifting her gaze back to the ceiling as her fingers traced idle patterns above her stomach, twisting and untwisting in a quiet rhythm. Her mind was restless, heavy with thoughts she couldn't shake, as the minutes slowly ticked by.
The day had been a blast. Leah, along with Charlie and Walker, had spent hours exploring Vancouver together. They'd wandered through the city, laughed over lunch, and hit the shops, but the best part was definitely when the boys had taken turns racing her around in a shopping cart. She'd rolled her eyes and pretended to hate it, but these were the moments she secretly loved.
Now, though, the fun was over. They'd all said their goodbyes, heading back to their separate apartments, and Leah had settled into bed. But sleep wouldn't come. Her body was worn out, her eyes felt heavy, yet her mind was wide awake, buzzing with leftover excitement and thoughts she couldn't silence. She sighed, feeling that familiar frustration rise - her body begging for rest, her mind stubbornly refusing to quiet down.
Desperate for a distraction, Leah pressed her palms against the mattress and sat up, her brown braids cascading down the sides of her face in a neat middle part. She leaned forward and reached for her phone, fingers brushing against the cool surface of the charger before lifting it free.
As she tapped the screen, the soft glow illuminated her features, casting gentle shadows around her dimly lit room. Ignoring the flood of notifications from various social media apps, she navigated straight to her contacts.
She scrolled slowly, her heart quickening with each swipe, until she reached the Ws. At the very top, adorned with a bright red heart, was Walker Scobell's name. Without hesitation, she clicked on it, and the screen filled with a picture of them embracing, joy radiating from their smiles during her birthday celebration.
Her thumb hovered over the call button, but something held her back, an invisible force keeping her from pressing it. She bit her lip, feeling a familiar wave of uncertainty wash over her.
He's probably asleep... No, he likely wasn't, but the thought of interrupting whatever he might be doing made her hesitate. With anyone else, she could brush aside the worry, but with Walker, it felt different - deeper.
A surge of confidence swept over her, that exhilarating feeling that pushes you to take a leap. In a swift motion, Leah pressed the call button, the screen illuminating the cherished photo of their hug once more. The ringtone filled the quiet room, its familiar tone echoing in her ears as she waited for a response.
But with that bold move came an immediate wave of regret. What was I thinking? Panic flooded her chest.
"Oh god," Leah whispered to herself, her thumb hovering anxiously over the hang-up button. Just as she gathered the courage to back out, the sound of a connection rang through the air, pulling her heart into her throat.
His voice came through warm and slightly raspy, filled with sleep but comforting, wrapping around her like a cozy blanket.
