It was late afternoon when they found her.
Carter, along with a small team of officers, descended into the church's hidden lower levels. They had followed a trail of clues—tiny cracks in the stone, remnants of her presence—leading them to a secret door hidden in the walls of the church's crypt. The air was thick with dust, and the smell of damp earth filled their lungs as they crept deeper into the darkness.
The silence in the tunnels was deafening. But then, just as they neared the heart of the underground complex, they heard a faint whisper—a voice that seemed to echo off the stone walls.
"Carter..." the voice rasped, almost a hiss. It was Gwen Meadows.
Carter motioned for his team to be quiet, signaling them to move slowly. They crept down a narrow passage, hearts pounding with anticipation.
And then, they found her.
Gwen Meadows stood before them in the center of an old, abandoned chamber, surrounded by faded symbols and relics of the past. She looked no different than when Carter had seen her last—her hair white and wild, her eyes filled with the same eerie calmness. But there was something new in her gaze—a hint of desperation. She knew this was the end.
"You can't stop the game, Carter," she said, her voice cold and detached. "You never could."
Carter stepped forward, his gun drawn but steady. "It's over, Gwen. This ends now. You can't hide anymore. Your son is dead. You don't have anyone left to protect you."
She didn't flinch. Instead, she smiled, though it wasn't a smile of relief. It was a smile of resignation. "You think I was hiding? I was always here, Detective. The game never ends. It's just beginning."
The officers moved in, closing the gap. But Gwen didn't resist. She simply raised her arms, as if she were surrendering—but her eyes told a different story. They were filled with a cold, triumphant gleam.
"You'll see," she whispered. "The game will never stop."
They arrested her without a struggle. The nightmare that had been haunting Oak Ridge for decades was finally over. Gwen Meadows was taken into custody and transported to the local detention center, where she was held under high security.
