The next morning (time: most likely dawn) Beth and I were rudely awakened by Man 1 blowing an air horn in "our room". Beth screamed and fell on me.
Lovely.
"Wake-y wacke-y! Eggs and... GET UP!" he yelled. I was surprised that he could not see that we were awake and practically up. Beth was now painfully rolling off of my back. I knew she would apologize if she could.
"Hit the showers, or we will hit you!" Man 1 continued, the sick lilt of enthusiasm in his voice. Beth grabbed the cothing bag, and we hurried down the narrow hall into the bathroom. I closed the door, but quickly opened it when Man 2 (coming out of nowhere) yelled at me to open it.
I don't want them to see us un-clothed! Beth signed.
Don't worry! We will quickly hop in together, and then pull our clothes on before we draw the curtain. I signed ingeniously.
You're a genius! Beth replied, as if she read my mind.
"I don't hear any water!" Man 1 yelled. Beth and I quickly stripped of our clothes, jumped into the tub, and turned on the water.
It was COLD! I told Beth to stand back because the water would warm up in bit. But we waited for about 5 minutes, and the water still didn't warm up at all.
We'll just have to deal with it. I signed. Beth and I gasped as the water pelted our skin, rolling over us, as if we were an obstacle they needed to pass to reach the moldy drain. We finished washing, and heard one of the men throw two towels in the bathroom. The towels were light blue with red polka dots which looked like blood stains. I quickly put one of the towels on. I looked at Beth.
Where is our bag of clothes? she asked. I shrugged my shoulders.
Should we go look for them? I motioned my hands, and she shook her head yes. We quickly ran to "our room". I searched for the bag and found it under the bed again.
The man must have put them there. Right? And for whatever reason stashed it under the bed. Beth signed.
Probably, I stopped, due to Man 1's voice.
"Sign language huh? No wonder why I never heard you brats talking. If I catch you using sign language again, it's... a consequence."
Beth and I nodded our heads quickly. Just then I heard a phone ring. It was mine. I knew it was Tyler because I set a special ringtone for when he called it. It was this Dubstep song that he loved. The man shouted a not-so-nice word, then stalked off to grab my phone. He rushed into the room and shoved my phone in our direction.
"Answer it now!" he yelled. My fingers fumbled over the phone to open it.
"Hello?" I asked.
"Brielle! I have called you 17 times! 17! Do you know how worried everyone is?! And Elizabeth too! Where in the world are you guys! Your parents are freaking out! They are on the phone with the police, RIGHT NOW! Well do you want me to hand the phone over to them?" he asked.
I covered the microphone and raised my brows expectantly at Man 1.
"Tell your mother you are fine. Nothing else." he said in a cold, or-else voice.
"Tyler? Yeah lemme talk to her." There were a few muffled sounds and then my mom's worried voice rang through the phone.
"Brielle! Where have you been! I have been worried sick! Why haven't you answered your phone?"
"Mom, I am fine."
Silence.
"Mom?"
Silence.
"MOM!"
Suddenly it was my dad's voice on the phone.
"Brielle, your mother is talking to the police, but you need to tell us where you are."
Silence.
"Brielle?"
"I am okay, Dad. I will talk to you...later. Bye."
"Brielle don't hang u--" I hung up.
I handed the phone back to the man, and waited until he left to burst into tears. Beth sprang over to me and hugged me, despite the fact that we were still in towels. I held onto her tightly. After a while we put our clothes on.
"Beth?"
"Yes?
"Will...will you sing?"
"Of course." She began to sing my favorite song, We Wont Run.
Pages turning, lights are burning
See what you could not see
It's plain as the day
The night makes you pay
For what was hidden underneathLonging to leave
But begging to feel that
Something will make you stay
Gotta believe that this all leads
Somewhere we've never beenWe won't run, we can fight
All that keeps us up at night
There is far to go now
Let's not waste a minute more
In deniesAs Beth continued to sing, tears streamed down my face. I loved this song so much.
. . .
Once we finished cleaning our room, Man 1 threw in 2 granola bars.
"Its breakfast so make it last. Or don't. Its not like i care." he said
"And this door STAYS OPEN!" He yelled slamming the door against the wall.
I walked over and picked the granola bars up as Man 1 left. Handing one to Beth, i opened mine and tried my best to savor the small bar.
When i finished i looked at Beth. She was still nibbling on a small part of her bar. Sh caught me staring and smiled. Her beautiful eyes shone like lapis. They were everything compared to mine. They were a dull brown, that reminded me of dirt, with blue streaks like spokes on a bike wheel.
Thinking of my eyes reminded me of Tyler's constant reminder of my "Awesome Lazer Eyes". Tears filled my eyes at the thought.
Goodness, are you ever going to stop crying?!
Shut up. I told the stupid voice. I was going crazy.
Beth and I had to get out of there, alive.
