As dawn broke, Seungcheol struggled to shake the restless night from his mind. The man's words lingered like a warning, a dark premonition hanging over them. His worn notebook sat open on the kitchen table, each line and name a chilling reminder of the stakes involved. Exposing the truth wasn't going to be simple—these people had influence, wealth, and the ability to erase anyone who stood in their way.
A sudden knock at the door jarred him from his thoughts. He opened it to find Jeonghan, his expression tense. Without a word, Jeonghan stepped inside, his eyes landing on the notebook spread across the table.
"Anything new?" he asked, breaking the silence.
"Plenty," Seungcheol replied, gesturing for him to sit. "We found leads on some of the higher-ups—financial backers, even a few corrupt officials. But it's like they've buried everything under layers of red tape. Every lead points to more questions."
Jeonghan frowned, leaning over to study the notes with Seungcheol. "They've built a fortress around their secrets. But we've got to find a way in."
Seungcheol watched Jeonghan's gaze grow intense, the quiet fury in his expression sending a shiver through him. It was this focus, this shared commitment, that drew Seungcheol closer to him, even as he tried to keep his emotions at bay. Jeonghan was a mystery he was desperate to solve, one that kept slipping further from his grasp the more he tried to understand it.
Suddenly, Seungcheol's phone rang, breaking the tension between them. It was Hoshi, his voice filled with worry.
"You two need to come down to the office," Hoshi said. "There's been an incident. It looks like a message... maybe a warning."
When they arrived at the office, they found the team gathered around the lobby. In the center of the room lay a single black envelope, ominous in its simplicity. Seungcheol's heart pounded as he picked it up, his eyes flicking over the words scrawled in elegant, precise handwriting: Stay away, or face the consequences.
Mingyu clenched his fists, anger flashing in his eyes. "They're watching us. They know we're close."
Joshua placed a steadying hand on Mingyu's shoulder, but even his calm expression couldn't hide the concern in his eyes. "This isn't just a threat. It's a reminder of their reach. They're not afraid to come after us."
Jeonghan's jaw tightened as he looked around, his gaze landing on each member of their group. "We knew this would happen. They're desperate, and they'll do anything to keep their secrets buried."
Seungcheol took a steadying breath, feeling the weight of responsibility pressing down on him. "We have to be careful. If they're willing to intimidate us, it means they're feeling threatened. We're making progress, and they know it."
Vernon, who had been silent until now, stepped forward. "So what's our next move? Do we continue, or do we step back?"
Seungcheol glanced around, meeting each of their gazes. He saw the same determination he felt mirrored in their eyes. They had come too far to back down now.
"We keep going," Seungcheol said firmly. "But we need to be cautious. Let's split up to follow the leads in the notebook, gathering more evidence on each target."
As they discussed their plans, Hoshi raised a hand, his usually carefree expression dark. "But maybe we should do this quietly. If they see us coming, they'll have time to cover their tracks. We need to be smart about how we approach them."
Seungcheol nodded, appreciating Hoshi's insight. "Agreed. We'll go in pairs, each of us following a different lead. Stay in contact, and be careful not to raise suspicion."
