We've been walking for about an hour now and we've made it just a little past town limits. Colten was talking a mile a minute about how cool and nice Dawson was. Despite the situation I had a smile on my face. I was also thinking of the gentle giant. I really had to make a plan though. We were homeless, broke, and on the run.
"Hey mommy, look at that pretty car!!!" Colten exclaimed. I looked behind us and saw a sleek black Jaguar. My eyes widened knowing damn well who is behind the wheel. Xavier. I quickly started running towards the woods that bordered the road with Colten and our suitcase in tow. We ran a little bit before hiding behind a tree. He was coming for me. And he was very close.
I quickly dug in my pocket for my pre paid phone. It only had 20 minutes on it seeing as though it was for emergencies. I reached in my back pocket for the wrinkled card with Dawson's number on it. I had no other choice, he was the only one close enough to get Colten and I away from Xavier. I quickly dialed his number. After two rings he picked up.
"Hello?" His deep voice rang out.
"Dawson! Please, I'm so sorry to bother you but Colten and I are in a little bit of a jam and we need you to pick us up right away!" I said, trying not to be too loud and give away our hiding spot. Colten was wide eyed staring back at me during the whole conversation."Eden?? Tell me where you are and I'll be there!" I head his keys jingling and his engine start up. I told him what road we were on and told him we were in the woods.
"Baby! I know you're in here. Come here. You know I don't like hide and seek." Xavier's voice echoed through the trees. I head some twigs snap and I grabbed Colten and ended the call. I ran deeper in the woods, leaving the suitcase.
"That's not way to treat your boyfriend. Come give me a welcome home kiss." He taunted, he was getting closer. All of the sudden I heard the roar of Dawson's car at the edge of the road.
"Eden!! Where are you? Colten?!" Dawson called out.
"Eden I swear to God, come out now or I will kill that kid in front of you." Xavier warned. He was much closer now. Closer than Dawson.
The foot steps got closer, and the voices started to mingle together. I wrapped my arms around my son and rocked him back and forth. I kissed his tears away but they were mingling with my own.
"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are grey. You'll never know dear how much I love you. So please, don't take my sunshine away" I sang softly to him. I tried blocking them out knowing that this was the end before it even began.
All of the sudden a gun shot rang out and all hope for Dawson was lost. A hand was placed over my mouth, muffling my scream. "Shhh, Eden. You're alright. We need to get out of here." Dawson's voice reassured me. I stood up and with Colten still in one arm threw myself at Dawson. His hand came down and stroked my hair and the other wrapped around Colten and I.
"I thought you were shot!" I croaked out. Did that mean that Xavier was dead?
"No honey, I'm alright. I shot some guy. He had a scar running down his face. He aimed for me but I took cover behind a tree. I hit something on him, not sure what. I don't know if he's dead or not so we need to get out of here now!" Dawson quickly explained. I nodded. I trusted my life and my son's with this stranger.. I shouldn't but there was something about him that made me believe that everything would be alright.
We had just made it to the car when the shots rang out and hit the car. Dawson shoved us in and slammed the door and pulled out his gun and returned fire. I covered Colten's ears and pushed his head down in case a stray bullet went through the glass windows of the car. Dawson hopped into the drivers seat and tore out onto the road and sped towards his house.
"What the hell just happened? Why was that guy after you Eden? Are you in some type of trouble?? Are either of you hurt? Who was he? That's it! You're staying with me! No but's about it!" Dawson stated. I stayed quiet, trying to think of a cover up story. I didn't want to tell Dawson about my old life. But I knew I probably should, not now though.
"I'm so sorry I called you. I had no other choice though. That man back there was a bad man.. A man from my past. I don't want to talk about it anymore." I spoke softly. Dawson sighed and turned into his drive.
"You're both alright?" He questioned. I nodded in response. "Well then c'mon, let's get you inside." We got up and all went in. I smiled and pat Charlie on the head as he wagged his odd tail at me. Colten sat on the ground playing with Charlie and I followed Dawson into the kitchen.
"Dawson?" I asked.
"Yeah?"
"Thank you." I whispered and leaned in and kissed his cheek. I quickly turned away and walked back into the living room to watch Colten. The kiss was a friendly thank you. Nothing more. I smiled as I watched my baby boy play with the dog. He looked like a normal little 5 year old. I wished I could give him the life he deserved.
The rest of the day consisted of Colten and I hanging out and playing with Charlie. Dawson went into his office explaining he had some work to tend to. It was now about 7 at night and I helped myself to Dawson's kitchen. I planned to make a thank you dinner.
I made baked potatoes, corn, steak and green beans. Colten was helping set the table when I left to go knock on the office door to tell Dawson dinner was ready. I raised my fist to knock when I heard Dawson's voice on the other side of the door.
"I dunno dad, I think she's in trouble. It's some scary stuff. A guy was shooting at her and her kid today! She doesn't have a home, she is out of money. She has nothing. Even her suitcase was left in the woods during the shoot out." Dawson's voice sounded drained. "What newspaper? Yes, her last name is Waters. So you think that's her long lost boyfriend? Something doesn't add up here. She seemed terrified. He was shooting at her for God's sake!" Dawson exclaimed. At this point is was very angry. How dare he go gossiping about me! If he was that curious he could've asked me. I heard Dawson say good bye to his dad but as he opened the door I was still frozen in my spot.
"Eden! Hi. Umm how long have you been standing there? How much did you hear?" Dawson asked.
"Enough to know that you like gossiping. I hate gossipers." I huffed and walked towards the kitchen, well tried. I didn't get far. I hand wrapped itself around my waist and pulled me back into the study and the door shut. It was times like this that I hated being so light and small.
"Hold your horses. I wasn't gossiping. You need help, little miss. You're in trouble. Whatever that trouble may be is too much for you alone to handle. If you'll just let me in, I can help." Dawson practically begged.
"I don't want you involved. You'll get hurt!" I tried reasoning with him.
"I'm a trained cop. I can handle myself." He said dryly.
"Not against a drug lord and a gang leader." I said just a dryly.
"Now what in the hell did you get yourself into?" Dawson questioned with wide eyes.
"A lot... I'm in deep. I don't think I'll ever get out." I whispered. A lone tear made its way down my cheek. The tear was soon brushed away by the rough pad of Dawson's thumb.
"Honey, we'll get through this. Whether you like it or not, I'm here to stay. I'm not leaving you or your son. Not when you're in trouble. You need to tell me what's going on. Take your time." Dawson said.
"I will. I'll tell you but I need time. I'll tell you by Friday. I just need a little time." I said. Today was Wednesday. I had two days to tell him. "Thank you Dawson. For everything. Now, come eat before Charlie and Colten eat it all." I joked trying to lighten the mood a little. Dawson just smiled and took my hand and we walked to the kitchen.
